After the Bodhisattva abandons the two extremes, having thus thoroughly entered the Middle Way, whatever is form, it is not completely known, nor is it completely unknown, that itself is its complete knowledge. Likewise, feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness, up to the Dharma of the Buddhas, whatever is completely known is also not, and whatever is not completely known is also not, that itself is its complete knowledge. Whatever is form, it is also not abandoned, nor is it not abandoned, that itself is its abandonment. Likewise, feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness, up to the Dharma of the Buddhas, whatever is abandoned is also not, nor is it not abandoned, that itself is its abandonment. Whatever is form, it is also not manifestly realized, nor is it not manifestly realized, that itself is its manifest realization. Whatever is form, the path of abandonment is also not cultivated, nor is it not cultivated, that itself is its cultivation. Likewise, feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness, up to the Dharma of the Buddhas, should be applied accordingly. Having spoken thus, the Bodhisattva Maitreya asked the Blessed One, saying: Blessed One, what is the Nirvana of a Bodhisattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom, who thus possesses complete knowledge, abandonment, manifest realization, and cultivation? Having asked thus, the Blessed One spoke to the Bodhisattva Maitreya: Maitreya, the Nirvana of the Bodhisattvas is profound! It is exceedingly profound! Having spoken thus, the Bodhisattva Maitreya asked the Blessed One, saying: Blessed One, for what reason is the Nirvana of the Bodhisattvas so profound and exceedingly profound? The Blessed One said: Maitreya, the Nirvana of the Bodhisattvas is neither Nirvana nor non-Nirvana; therefore, it is said to be profound and exceedingly profound. Having spoken thus, the Bodhisattva Maitreya asked the Blessed One, saying: Blessed One, how is it that the Nirvana of the Bodhisattvas is not Nirvana? Nirvana

also not transcended. The Blessed One declared: Maitreya, because it is based on the benefit of others, it is not completely abandoned from samsara, therefore it is not transcended from suffering. Because it is based on the benefit of oneself, it is not completely abandoned from nirvana, therefore it is nirvana. After he declared this, Bodhisattva Maitreya said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, if that is the case, Bodhisattva, based on the benefit of others, does not completely abandon samsara, since he does not completely abandon samsara, how can he abandon nirvana? Blessed One, if that is the case, Bodhisattva, based on the benefit of oneself, does not completely abandon nirvana, how can he abandon samsara? The Blessed One declared: Maitreya, for this, when a Bodhisattva practices in the Perfection of Wisdom, he does not perceive samsara as samsara. He also does not perceive nirvana as nirvana. If he does not perceive it in that way, then samsara and nirvana will become equal. Why is that? Because if he does not perceive samsara as samsara, then he will not be born in samsara like nirvana. If he does not perceive nirvana as nirvana, then he will not be attached to nirvana like samsara. Therefore, abiding in the realm of non-perception, it should be understood by this reasoning that he neither completely abandons samsara nor completely abandons nirvana. After he declared this, Bodhisattva Maitreya said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, then the Bodhisattva who practices in the Perfection of Wisdom, abiding in the realm of non-perception, since he has not abandoned samsara, then he has not accepted it either? Since he has not abandoned nirvana, then he has not accepted it either? Blessed One, if that is the case, since he has not accepted it, then how can he not have abandoned it? The Blessed One declared: Maitreya, I do not say whether he accepts samsara or does not accept samsara. Maitreya, the Bodhisattva who practices in the Perfection of Wisdom, whose mind is controlled by the wisdom that focuses on the realm of non-perception, the ten directions of the worl

For the sake of skillfully showing samsara in as many realms as the sands of the Ganges River, I say that bodhisattvas do not completely abandon nirvana. Because they abide in emptiness, which has no object of focus, I say that they do not completely abandon nirvana. After he had spoken, the bodhisattva Maitreya said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One, how should all characteristics be viewed in non-conceptualization? The Blessed One said: Maitreya, contemplate form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, up to the dharmas of the Buddhas, and from the emptiness of form up to the emptiness of the dharmas of the Buddhas, contemplate those dharmas and those emptinesses, and that which is non-dual and free from elaboration. This, Maitreya, is how all characteristics should be viewed in all respects. After he had spoken, the bodhisattva Maitreya said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One, is it the case that all the shravakas are of one kind, or that they abide in complete nirvana? The Blessed One said: Maitreya, that is not the case. Why is that? Maitreya, these worldly beings are of various realms, of many realms. Among those worldly beings of various realms and many realms, there are many kinds and natures of sentient beings. Maitreya, there are also sentient beings whose lineage and birth desire good distinctions from the beginning and who attain good distinctions. There are also sentient beings whose lineage and birth desire bad distinctions from the beginning and who attain bad distinctions and are satisfied with that. There are also lineages and births that desire bad distinctions from the beginning and attain bad distinctions, but are not satisfied with that, and later desire superior good distinctions and attain good distinctions. After he had spoken, the bodhisattva Maitreya said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One, when those three kinds of sentient beings attain arhatship, do they attain the unsurpassed
