After thus asking, the Bhagavan said this to Maitreya Bodhisattva. Maitreya, a great Bodhisattva who practices the Prajnaparamita, wishing to learn the Bodhisattva's training, should train that form is only a name. Feeling, perception, formation, consciousness are only names, up to the Buddha's dharma are only names. After thus speaking, Maitreya Bodhisattva asked the Bhagavan thus. Bhagavan, when should form be known as a name, this is focused on with things and, together. Feeling, perception, formation, consciousness should be known as a name, this is focused on with things and together, up to the Buddha's dharma should be known as a name, this is focused on with things and together, thus relying on those and those conditioned signs and focusing on things and together, how is that a Bodhisattva?

Ah, the great Bodhisattva should train to treat form as merely a name. From feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness being treated as merely names, up to the Dharma of the Buddha also being treated as merely a name. If the name has no substance, then calling it "This is form" is merely a name, which is also unreasonable. Calling it "This is feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness" is merely a name, which is also unreasonable, and even calling it "This is the Dharma of the Buddha" is also unreasonable. After this request, the Blessed One said to Maitreya Bodhisattva: Maitreya, the concept of "form" is a name arbitrarily assigned to those things that are the characteristics of fabrication. What is called "feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness" is a name arbitrarily assigned, and even what is called "the Dharma of the Buddha" is a name arbitrarily assigned. After saying this, Maitreya Bodhisattva asked the Blessed One: Blessed One, for what reason does one believe, understand, and separately recognize the name called "form" through the objects of the characteristics of fabrication? If, through the name called "form," one also believes, understands, and separately recognizes those objects of the characteristics of fabrication, then how can it be said that the name "This is form" is arbitrarily assigned to those objects of the characteristics of fabrication? Blessed One, for what reason are the objects of the characteristics of fabrication called feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness? Blessed One, for what reason are the objects of the characteristics of fabrication even called the Dharma of the Buddha, thereby leading to belief, understanding, and separate recognition? If the names between feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness, and the Dharma of the Buddha, can cause one to believe, understand, and separately recognize those objects of the characteristics of fabrication, then how can one say "This is form" to those objects of the characteristics of fabrication?
