After thus reporting, the Blessed One spoke to the Bodhisattva Maitreya: Therefore, I ask you, you should answer as you are able. Maitreya, what do you think? For those things that are characteristics of formation, if they are apart from what is called form, without reliance, without abiding, then for those things that are characteristics of formation, would they be called form?

As for what is called "earth" and so on, those are nominally established. If so, with regard to these characteristics of phenomena, will some characteristics of phenomena give rise to a concept of self that is different from the characteristics of phenomena, or an imputation, or a name or term, or an attachment? Maitreya asked. The Blessed One replied: Yes, it will be so. Maitreya, you should also understand this in this way through this scripture. With regard to the characteristics of phenomena, and those such as form, up to what is called the Dharma of the Buddha, those are nominally established. After the Blessed One spoke thus, Bodhisattva Maitreya asked the Blessed One thus: Blessed One, if that is the case, then, the characteristics of phenomena, the nature of form, will it not become an object of focus? Relying on what does it become a name, concept, imputation, and term? And what is called form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, up to what is called the Dharma of the Buddha, will those not become objects of focus? After asking thus, the Blessed One said to Bodhisattva Maitreya: Maitreya, with regard to the characteristics of phenomena, in names, concepts, imputations, and terms, what is called form, what do you think? Is it a nature, or a nature, or merely a designation? Maitreya Bodhisattva replied: Blessed One, I think it is merely a designation. The Blessed One said: Then, Maitreya, how do you think that the nature of form is an object of focus? Maitreya, with regard to the characteristics of phenomena, in names, concepts, imputations, and terms, what is called feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, up to what is called the Dharma of the Buddha, what do you think? Is it a nature? Feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, up to the Dharma of the Buddha, is it merely a designation? Maitreya Bodhisattva replied: Blessed One, I think it is merely a designation. After saying this, the Bodhisattva Maitreya addressed the Blessed One as follows: "Blessed One, is it the case that form is merely name, cognition, sign, designation, and convention? Blessed One, is it the case that from feeling, perception, formation to consciousness, up to the Dharma of the Buddhas, it is merely name, cognition, sign, designation, and convention? If so, wouldn't the very nature of what is said to be name, cognition, sign, designation, and convention, from feeling, perception, formation to consciousness, up to the Dharma of the Buddhas, become an object of focus?" After this was said, the Blessed One addressed the Bodhisattva Maitreya as follows: "Maitreya, what do you think? Is what is known as form merely name, cognition, sign, designation, and convention?
