Then, what kind of proximity occurs in the intermediate state between the two? It is like this: the position of a Hearer or the position of a Solitary Buddha. Subhuti, it is like this, for example, if a certain man or woman uses a newly made water pot to draw water from a river, lake, pond, or well, Subhuti, it should be known that the water pot with which he draws water can safely return home. Subhuti, similarly, for a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, for the sake of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, there is also faith, there is also patience, there is also fondness, there is also superior intention, there is also joy, there is also delight, there is also non-abandonment, there is also non-renunciation of diligence, and also he is completely upheld by the Perfection of Wisdom, completely upheld by skillful means, completely upheld by the Perfection of Concentration, completely upheld by the Perfection of Diligence, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Ethics, and the Perfection of Generosity, completely upheld until the state of All-Knowingness, Subhuti, then that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, like this, will not, in the intermediate state, become close to the position of a Hearer or the position of a Solitary Buddha, but without harm or loss, he will manifestly awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Subhuti, it is like this, for example, if a ship on the ocean, not tied up and not repaired for leaks, is loaded with goods and then put into the water, Subhuti, that ship will be destroyed, the ship will also separate, and the goods will also separate, and thus, because that merchant is not skilled in means, he will be endowed with great harm, and it should be known that he will completely lose a great amount of precious jewels. Subhuti, similarly, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is also like that; for the sake of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, there is also faith, there is also patience, there is also fondness, there is also superior intention, there is also joy, there is also delight, there is also non-abandonment, there is also non-renunciation of diligence, but he is not completely upheld by the Perfection of Wisdom, not completely upheld by skillful means, not completely upheld by the Perfection of Concentration, the Perfection of Diligence, the Perfection of Patience, and the Perfection of Ethics.

The perfection of wisdom and the perfection of generosity are not fully grasped. All emptiness is not fully grasped. The dharmas on the side of enlightenment are not fully grasped. The noble truths, the meditations, the immeasurables, the formless absorptions, the eight liberations, the nine successive abidings, and the doors of liberation—emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness—and the superknowledges, the samādhis, the dhāraṇī doors, the ten powers of the Tathāgata, the four fearlessnesses, the four particular perfect knowledges, great love, great compassion, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha are not fully grasped. If even up to all-knowingness is not fully grasped, then, Subhūti, that bodhisattva-mahāsattva will have the fault of an intermediate state. Thus, he will be separated from the great meaning of the jewel of all-knowingness, and it should be known that he will fall away from the great jewel. Subhūti, what is the fault of the intermediate state for bodhisattva-mahāsattvas? It is like this: the ground of a śrāvaka or the ground of a pratyekabuddha. Subhūti, for example, if a wise person launches a ship on the great ocean, having tightly bound and connected it, and loads it with goods, Subhūti, it should be known that the ship on the ocean will not be destroyed in the middle, but the ship will reach whatever direction it travels. Subhūti, likewise, whatever bodhisattva-mahāsattva has faith, patience, intention, higher intention, joy, delight, non-abandonment, and non-renunciation of diligence for the sake of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and is fully grasped by the perfection of wisdom, fully grasped by skillful means, fully grasped by the perfection of meditation, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of patience, the perfection of ethics, and the perfection of generosity, and all emptiness,

The dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment, and the noble truths, and the dhyanas, and the immeasurables, and the formless absorptions, and the eight liberations, and the nine successive abidings, and the doors of liberation emptiness, and signlessness, and wishlessness, and the superknowledges, and the samadhis, and the dharani doors, and the ten powers of the Tathagata, and the four fearlessnesses, and the four analytical knowledges, and the great loving-kindness, and the great compassion, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha. If he is completely grasped by all aspects of omniscience, Subhuti, that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva will not turn back from unexcelled, perfect, complete enlightenment in the intermediate state. Subhuti, it also changes in that way. Why? Subhuti, because for the sake of unexcelled, perfect, complete enlightenment, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva has faith, has patience, has desire, has superior intention, has joy, has delight, has non-abandonment, and has non-abandonment of diligence. And he is completely grasped by the Perfection of Wisdom, he is completely grasped by skillful means, by the Perfection of Dhyana, by the Perfection of Diligence, by the Perfection of Patience, by the Perfection of Morality, and by the Perfection of Generosity. If he is completely grasped by all aspects of omniscience, that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva will not fall into the ground of a Hearer or into the ground of a Solitary Buddha. Subhuti, it is like this, for example, there is a person who is one hundred and twenty years old, old, decrepit, and frail. If his body is afflicted by wind, or by bile, or by phlegm, or by a disease of combination. Subhuti, what do you think of this? Is that person able to rise from his bed alone and weakly? He said: No, Blessed One. Blessed One, although he is able to rise from that bed, he is not able to go even one krosha or two kroshas, because he is old,
