If one knows it to be solitary, then the Bodhisattva Mahasattva should thus practice the Perfection of Wisdom of solitude. This is the Perfection of Wisdom of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Furthermore, if the Bodhisattva Mahasattva dedicates those roots of virtue of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and the Sangha of the Hearers who have completely passed into Nirvana, one should dedicate them in this way: Just as those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, have completely passed into Nirvana, so too may these roots of virtue completely pass into Nirvana. Just as those roots of virtue are, so too is this dedication completely passed into Nirvana. The mind with which one dedicates, that mind is also in accordance with that, it is its very nature. If one knows in this way, then it is dedicated to the Unsurpassed Perfect and Complete Enlightenment. If one dedicates in that way, perception will not be reversed, mind will not be reversed, view will not be reversed. If the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, while practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, knows those roots of virtue of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, in terms of characteristics, then it is not a dedication to the Unsurpassed Perfect and Complete Enlightenment. All those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, of the past are not characteristics, they are not the object of characteristics. If one thinks in that way, one is still clinging to characteristics, and it is not a dedication of those roots of virtue to the Unsurpassed Perfect and Complete Enlightenment. In that case, one's perception will be reversed, one's mind will be reversed, one's view will be reversed. If the Bodhisattva Mahasattva does not know and does not cling to characteristics with regard to those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and those roots of virtue, and those manifest actions, and those generation of minds, then it is a dedication of those roots of virtue to the Unsurpassed Perfect and Complete Enlightenment. In that case, the perception of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva will not be reversed, the mind

Invertedness will not occur. Inverted views will not occur. Maitreya said: Venerable Subhuti, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva not fixate on those roots of virtue and dedicate them to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment? Subhuti said: Bodhisattva Mahasattvas should train in these skillful means of the Prajnaparamita, and from the Prajnaparamita, the skillful means of Bodhisattva Mahasattvas should be understood. Without relying on the Prajnaparamita, one cannot dedicate meritorious deeds. Maitreya said: The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, also say that in the Prajnaparamita there is nothing, it is unattainable, and those roots of virtue, and those manifest actions, and the mind of enlightenment with which one dedicates to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, also say there is nothing, it is unattainable, wouldn't this become a fault? In this regard, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Prajnaparamita, one should thus thoroughly examine: My body has also ceased, those roots of virtue, and those manifest actions, and the mind of enlightenment have also ceased, if I fixate on the characteristics and discriminate the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and those roots of virtue, and those manifest actions, and the mind of enlightenment, then the Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly enlightened Buddhas, would not rejoice and praise the dedication in this way of characteristics. Why is that? Because in this way, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, who have passed into complete nirvana, are fixated on characteristics and discriminated, that fixation becomes very great. Therefore, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who wants to dedicate those roots of virtue should dedicate them without fixation and without characteristics. The Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly enlightened Buddhas, do not approve of those with notions of fixation and characteristics.
