It is merely designated by convention; there is no birth or cessation. Because that name is not within, nor is it without, nor is it perceived as the absence of both. Subhuti, what is called the realm of form is merely designated as a dharma. For that which is designated as a dharma, it is like this: what is called the realm of form is merely designated by convention with names and concepts; there is no birth or cessation. Because that name is not within, nor is it without, nor is it perceived as the absence of both. Subhuti, what is called the realm of eye consciousness is merely designated as a dharma. For that which is designated as a dharma, it is like this: what is called the realm of eye consciousness is merely designated by convention with names and concepts; there is no birth or cessation. Because that name is not within, nor is it without, nor is it perceived as the absence of both. Subhuti, the realm of ear, the realm of sound, the realm of ear consciousness, the realm of nose, the realm of smell, the realm of nose consciousness, the realm of tongue, the realm of taste, the realm of tongue consciousness, the realm of body, the realm of touch, the realm of body consciousness, the realm of mind, the realm of dharmas, and the realm of mind consciousness, these are merely designated as dharmas. For that which is designated as a dharma, it is like this: what is called the realm of mind consciousness is merely designated by convention with names and concepts; there is no birth or cessation. Because that name is not within, nor is it without, nor is it perceived as the absence of both. Subhuti, similarly, whatever is called Prajnaparamita, Bodhisattva, and the name of Bodhisattva, these are also merely designated as dharmas. For that which is designated as a dharma, it is like this: what is called Prajnaparamita, Bodhisattva, and the name of Bodhisattva are merely designated by convention with names and concepts; there is no birth or cessation. Because that name is not within, nor is it without, nor is it perceived as the absence of both. Subhuti, for example, what is called the internal body is merely a name, it is a conventional designation; the skull is called a name.

and the skull that is designated by name, and the cervical vertebra that is designated by name, and the shoulder bone, and the arm bone, and the joint bone, and the rib bone, and the hip bone, and the thigh bone, and the shin bone, and the foot bone, these are also merely established as dharma. It is merely designated as 'earth.' And that which is designated as 'dharma' has no arising or ceasing, except that it is designated by terms as mere names and symbols. That name is neither within, nor without, nor can it be perceived as both non-existent. Subhuti, similarly, all those dharmas that are called 'Prajnaparamita,' and called 'Bodhisattva,' and called 'the name of Bodhisattva,' are merely designated as 'dharma.' And that which is designated as 'dharma' has no arising or ceasing, except that it is designated by terms as mere names and symbols. That name is neither within, nor without, nor can it be perceived as both non-existent. Subhuti, thus, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices Prajnaparamita, he should learn what is designated as name and symbol, what is designated as instruction, and what is designated as dharma. Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices Prajnaparamita in this way, he does not truly see what is called 'form' as permanent. He does not truly see what is called 'form' as impermanent. He does not truly see what is called 'form' as happiness. He does not truly see what is called 'form' as suffering. He does not truly see what is called 'form' as self. He does not truly see what is called 'form' as non-self. He does not truly see what is called 'form' as peace. He does not truly see what is called 'form' as non-peace. He does not truly see what is called 'form' as emptiness. He does not truly see what is called 'form' as non-emptiness. He does not truly see what is called 'form' as having signs. He does not truly see what is called 'form' as without signs. He does not truly see what is called 'form' as having aspiration. He does not truly see what is called 'form' as without aspiration. He does not truly see what is called 'form' as conditioned. He does not truly see what is called 'form' as unconditioned. He does not truly see what is called 'form' as completely defiled. He does not truly see what is called 'form' as purified.
