Residing as taught in this profound Perfection of Wisdom, for some days practicing the four close placements of mindfulness, the four complete abandonings, the four legs of magical power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven limbs of enlightenment, the eightfold noble path, the four noble truths, the four concentrations, the four immeasurables, the four formless absorptions, the eight liberations, the nine serial abidings in concentration, the door to liberation of emptiness, the door to liberation of signlessness, the door to liberation of wishlessness, the various superknowledges, the various samadhis, the various dharani doors, the ten powers of the Thus-Gone One, the four fearlessnesses, the four individual correct knowledges, great love, great compassion, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, then their merit increases greatly. Why is that? It is impossible and cannot occur that a bodhisattva mahasattva who does not separate from the Perfection of Wisdom would turn back from all-knowledge; that is not the case. Subhuti, this is the case: a bodhisattva mahasattva who separates from the Perfection of Wisdom has a place to turn back from all-knowledge. Subhuti, therefore, a bodhisattva mahasattva should not separate from the Perfection of Wisdom. Subhuti, what do you think? If a bodhisattva mahasattva, separated from the Perfection of Wisdom, were to abide for as many eons as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River, making offerings of wealth, offerings of Dharma, and engaging in internal correct mental engagement, dedicating them to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, would the merit of that son or daughter of good family increase greatly? They replied, "Bhagavan, it would increase greatly! Sugata, it would increase greatly!"

That alms-giving, that Dharma-giving, and that mindfulness endowed with proper placement within, if dedicated to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, the merit of that son or daughter of good family will greatly increase. Why is that? It is like this: the dedication of the Perfection of Wisdom is the supreme dedication. Whatever dedication is done apart from the Perfection of Wisdom, that is not a true dedication. Subhuti, therefore, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who wishes to fully awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment should be skilled in the dedication of the Perfection of Wisdom. Subhuti, what do you think? If a son or daughter of good family, apart from the Perfection of Wisdom, were to remain for as many eons as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River, and were to rejoice in all the roots of virtue of the Buddhas, Bhagavat, the Sangha of Hearers, and the renunciates of the past, future, and present, and were to dedicate them to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, would the merit of that son or daughter of good family increase greatly because of that? They replied: Bhagavat, it would increase greatly! Sugata, it would increase greatly! The Bhagavat said: Subhuti, even more so, if a son or daughter of good family were to abide in this profound Perfection of Wisdom as it has been taught, and were to dedicate the roots of virtue of a few days to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, the merit of that son or daughter of good family would increase greatly. Why is that? Subhuti, the Perfection of Wisdom precedes all dedications. Subhuti, therefore, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who wishes to fully awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment should be skilled in the dedication of the Perfection of Wisdom. They replied: Bhagavat, there is no manifestation to be apprehended; it is all completely imputed. When the Bhagavat had spoken thus, then, how should a son or daughter of good family...

That daughter's merit will increase even more. World Honored One, without manifest engagement, one cannot generate right view, nor can one enter without fault. One cannot obtain the fruit of stream-enterer, nor can one obtain the fruit of once-returner, nor can one obtain the fruit of non-returner, nor can one obtain the state of Arhat, nor can one awaken to unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment. The World Honored One said: Subhuti, it is just so, it is just so. Because without manifest engagement, one cannot generate right view, nor can one enter without fault, one cannot obtain the fruit of stream-enterer, nor can one obtain the fruit of once-returner, nor can one obtain the fruit of non-returner, nor can one obtain the state of Arhat, nor can one awaken to unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment. Subhuti, for a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who practices the perfection of wisdom, that giving is also without manifest engagement, appearing as emptiness, appearing as tranquility, appearing as unobtainable, appearing as without essence. Why is that? Subhuti, because the Bodhisattva Mahasattva has diligently trained in inner emptiness, diligently trained in outer emptiness, diligently trained in inner-outer emptiness, diligently trained in emptiness of emptiness, diligently trained in great emptiness, diligently trained in ultimate emptiness, diligently trained in conditioned emptiness, diligently trained in unconditioned emptiness, diligently trained in emptiness beyond extremes, diligently trained in emptiness without beginning or end, diligently trained in emptiness without abandonment, diligently trained in nature emptiness, diligently trained in emptiness of all dharmas, diligently trained in self-characteristic emptiness, diligently trained in unobservable emptiness, diligently trained in non-entity emptiness, diligently trained in self-nature emptiness, diligently trained in the self of non-entity.
