A person, disregarding my livelihood, offered a garland of lamps to the stupa of the Tathagata's hair and nails, and then King Ajatashatru severed his livelihood with a wheel. He, with great devotion in his heart towards me, passed away and was born in the Thirty-Three Heavens, becoming a good deity. He came to me at night, and I taught him the Dharma, and he saw the truth and then returned to his abode. Therefore, monks, do not be afraid of merit! Why is that? Because it is another name for happiness. What is liked, loved, very loved, and pleasing is merit. Monks, you should be afraid of non-merit! Why is that? Because it is another name for suffering. What is disliked, unloved, very unloved, and displeasing is non-merit. Monks, I have seen clearly from a long time ago that merit done a long time ago, its ripening will be to experience what is liked, loved, very loved, and pleasing. Monks, having cultivated loving-kindness for seven years, I did not come to this world for seven cycles of destruction and formation. When the world was destroyed, I was born in the ranks of the gods of Abhasvara. When the world was formed, I was born in the empty Brahma palace, and there I became the owner of Brahma and Mahabrahma, and I could subdue others, but others could not subdue me. I ruled over a hundred thousand sentient beings and was praised as the highest among sentient beings. Thirty-six thousand times I became Indra, the lord of the gods. Countless times I became a universal monarch, conquering the four corners and possessing the seven precious things. The seven precious things are like this: the precious wheel, the precious white elephant, the precious horse, the precious jewel, the precious consort, the precious householder, and the precious general, these are the seven precious things. I also had a thousand sons, and they were all brave, capable, and handsome.

Subduing the armies of others, I will subdue this great land with righteousness, even to the edge of the sea, suppressing with staff and weapons, so that there is no unhappiness. At that time, I thought to myself: By the ripening of the fruit of what karma have I become so powerful and magical here? And I thought: By the ripening of the three fruits of this karma, I have become so powerful and magical. What are the three? They are giving, taming, and gentleness. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the Teacher spoke again: Those who desire auspiciousness and happiness should look to the ripening of merit. Monks, if you cultivate a mind of loving-kindness for seven years, you will experience the destruction and transformation of the kalpa seven times in this world. At the time of destruction, I myself am the light and intermediary of the world. After the transformation, in the world of Brahma, also in the place of the great Brahma's dominion, I dwell for a period of seven times. Thirty-six times I became the king of the gods. For countless hundreds of thousands of times, I became a king of great fame and fear. Anointed with the kingship of the royal family, I became the lord of Jambudvipa. Without staff or weapons, I also subdued this world. By the nature of dharma, naturally and truly, I followed and learned. After turning the wheel of dharma well, in the center of this earth, in a place of wealth and great enjoyment, I was also born into such a lineage. All wealth and possessions are perfectly complete, and I also possess the seven jewels, with many riches and implements. I became a king of great fame and fear. By the cause of that great power, I became supreme in whatever place I was born. The Buddha, who benefits the world, spoke thus. Knowing this wonderful thing, this is also no small magic. What wise person would not have faith? Even if that lineage is lowly, if one desires to benefit them, and desires to manifest great powers, one should make the excellent dharma supreme, and remember the Buddha's teachings. When the Blessed One had spoken thus, the monks were delighted,

He rejoiced greatly at what was said. The seventh verse of the Sutra of the Three Doors from the Introduction (ends). In short: A house foundation with steps, and a veranda with a platform, pillars painted with vermilion, and walls painted with creeper patterns. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. The householder Anathapindika went to where the Bhagavan was, bowed his head at the feet of the Bhagavan, and said to the Bhagavan: If the Bhagavan permits, I will build a final incense chamber around the stupa of the Bhagavan's hair and nails, and also sculpt steps. The Bhagavan instructed: Therefore, householder, please allow it to be done. Again, the Bhagavan said: If you permit, I will build a veranda for the stupa of the Bhagavan's hair and nails. The Bhagavan instructed: Householder, since it is so, I allow you to do it. Then again, the Bhagavan said: If you permit, I will build a veranda around it. The Bhagavan instructed: Therefore, householder, I allow you to do it. Again, the Bhagavan said: If you permit, I will paint the pillars with vermilion. The Bhagavan instructed: Householder, since it is so, please allow it to be done. Again, the Bhagavan said: If you permit, I will paint creeper patterns on the walls.
