Explanation of the Third Aspect of the Topic Explanation of the Third Aspect of the Topic In brief: mandala, alms bowl, bathhouse, smoke, beverage, rinsing cup, iron, hair, center of a chariot, rafter, lamp, stupa. In summary: A mandala is a place where deities reside, and one does not dwell in half or one-third of a place. One cannot ordain without an alms bowl, and one should not write on an alms bowl. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was residing in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. The monks were washing their alms bowls wherever they happened to be, and that place was filled with bees and became unsightly. Brahmins and householders saw this and said, "Have some noble ones urinated or defecated in this place?" They replied, "Good people, no one has urinated or defecated here; we washed our alms bowls." They said, "Venerable ones, you should make a mandala here." From then on, they remained silent. They mocked, saying, "The renunciates, sons of Shakya, are unclean, washing their alms bowls wherever they happen to be." When this happened, the monks reported it to the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan addressed the monks, "The brahmins and householders are mocking unnecessarily. Therefore, do not wash your alms bowls wherever you happen to be. Monks, make a mandala in the place where you have washed your alms bowls." After the Bhagavan said to make a mandala, the monks made a circular mandala in the place where they had washed their alms bowls. The brahmins and householders came to the temple and saw that there was a mandala in the middle of the dwellings. They asked, "What is this?" Some said, "What is the use of looking at this and trying to understand? The renunciates, sons of Shakya, worship the sun." Others said, "Yes, it is true that the renunciates, sons of Shakya, worship the sun." When this happened, the monks reported it to the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan said, "Therefore, do not make a mandala like the sun." The Bhagavan said to make a mandala like the sun.

After saying not to make a circle, the monks made a mandala like a half-moon. There, Brahmins and householders came to the temple again and said, "Hey, the ascetics of the Shakya clan believe in the moon." After the monks reported this to the Blessed One, the Blessed One instructed, "Since that is the case, do not make a mandala like the moon either. When the monks started to make a square, Brahmins and householders came to the temple again and said, 'Hey, the ascetics of the Shakya clan believe in the cow.'" After the monks reported this to the Blessed One, the Blessed One instructed, "Since that is the case, do not make a square mandala or two kinds of mandalas, but make it like a spearhead and a drum." Since the monks did not know what to do, the Blessed One instructed, "Smear it with cow dung, earth, or water. The Blessed One made two kinds of mandalas." After saying this, the monks made those two kinds of mandalas for the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and were satisfied with it. After the monks reported this to the Blessed One, the Blessed One instructed, "For the Three Jewels, whether it is the sun, the moon, or whatever you believe in, you can do it in any way, do not have doubts about it." The origin of the story is in Shravasti. Then, the Blessed One instructed the monks, "Monks, those who give alms and the deities who receive offerings from the almsgivers should be made happy at all times in three ways, be properly worshiped, and be properly made comfortable. What are the three? Cleaning and sweeping at all times, also doing the work of offerings at all times, and also dedicating the merit of giving at all times. Monks, if those who give alms and the almsgivers make the deities who receive offerings happy at all times, worship them properly, and make them comfortable properly, then those who give alms and the almsgivers will be loved again because of their good intentions." The Blessed One instructed in this way, and after the Sugata spoke in this way, the Teacher spoke again.
