The time has not yet come. When those bhikkhunis went to various places, from the offerings she obtained, she made and ate eighteen to twenty kinds of food, until she said, "I am a holder of the three pitakas." Starting from scolding those bhikkhunis with few desires, until the Blessed One gave instructions and established the precepts. Furthermore, if any bhikkhuni begs for offerings for the newly arrived bhikkhunis, but eats them alone, she commits a nissaggiya pacittiya offense. Here, "bhikkhuni" refers to Thullananda. "For the newly arrived bhikkhunis" refers to the female disciples who are hearers of the Blessed One. "Offerings" refers to two kinds of offerings: offerings of food and offerings of clothing. In this case, it refers to offerings of food. Committing a nissaggiya pacittiya offense is as previously stated. So, how does one incur the offense? As much as the bhikkhuni has obtained offerings for the newly arrived bhikkhunis, as long as she eats them alone, she incurs a complete nissaggiya pacittiya offense. The thirtieth nissaggiya pacittiya offense is complete. The story takes place in Shravasti. Then, the bhikkhuni Thullananda properly urged for food for the sangha, so the Brahmin and householder's wives said to Thullananda, "Venerable lady, why not make food offerings for the sangha? It is too little like this." After repeatedly urging like this, she alone prepared various foods, from exquisite foods to eighteen or twenty kinds of food, and then ate them, until she said, "Please rejoice!" and "I am a holder of the three pitakas." Starting from scolding those bhikkhunis with few desires, until the Blessed One established the precepts. Furthermore, if any bhikkhuni begs for offerings for the sangha, but blesses them to be food for her own mouth, she commits a nissaggiya pacittiya offense. "Bhikkhuni" refers to Thullananda. "For the sangha" refers to the Tathagata's female disciples of the sangha of hearers.

Regarding what is called "gain," there are two types of gain: the gain of food and the gain of clothing. In this context, it refers to the gain of food. "Having begged" means having obtained it from another. "Mouth" refers to food in the mouth. "Giving" means secretly swallowing. "Relinquishing downfall" means as previously stated. So, how does one fall into downfall? If a bhikkhuni even slightly gives the gain of the sangha to her own mouth, it will entirely become a relinquishing downfall. The thirty-one relinquishing downfalls are complete. The origin of the story is in Shravasti. At that time, the king of the country of Lushen sent a lava gem as a gift to King Guangming, who in turn gave it to the declining royal soldiers. Those soldiers thought that Dharma-giving was our virtuous friend, so they gave the lava gem to him. Dharma-giving also hung the lava gem on the clothes rack of the Dharma garment. When Juxi's mother entered the residence, she saw it and asked Dharma-giving, "Holy Mother, whose is this lava gem?" Dharma-giving replied, "It's mine." Then, Juxi's mother said, "The Blessed One said, 'Merit is what should be done; not doing merit leads to suffering. In this world and the next, those who do merit will be happy.' This saying has come true, you are worshiped by gods and humans because you practice merit." Then, Dharma-giving said to Juxi's mother, "If you want it, take it." Juxi's mother said, "This is the defeated object of the gods." After saying that, she took the lava gem, divided it, put her hands together, and wandered in the main roads and alleys. Brahmins and householders saw it and said, "Who is this? Is it the wife of a rich man? Is it the wife of a merchant? Or the wife of a captain?" Others said, "It's Juxi's mother." Look, knowledgeable people! Whether it's the wife of a Brahmin or a householder, they all wear heavy and expensive clothes, while this Shramani, the son of Shakya
