O fortunate ones, if one of you is about to be struck, why do you all fall to the ground and weep? They said: If we did not weep, who would be struck for no reason? Why do some monks with few desires scold, revile, slander, and speak harshly when monks are angry, agitated, and arrogant, and intend to strike a monk out of displeasure? At that time, the monks reported this to the Blessed One. Then, because of this event, this basis of discussion, and this circumstance, the Blessed One convened the monastic community of monks, and so forth, as before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly commit offenses, and so forth, as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, questioned the venerable Charga: Charga, is it true that you were angry, agitated, and arrogant, and intended to strike a monk out of displeasure? Venerable one, it is true. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked him, saying: This is not the conduct of a monk, it is not in accordance, it is not appropriate, it is not in accordance with the rules, it is not something that a renunciate should do. Then, after rebuking him in various ways, the Blessed One addressed the monks, saying: Monks, therefore, having truly seen ten benefits, a training rule should be established for the disciples in the Vinaya, and so forth, as before. My disciples should recite the training rule of the Vinaya in this way: If any monk, being angry, agitated, and arrogant, intends to strike a monk out of displeasure, even with the palm of his hand, it is a Patayantika offense. Any monk, refers to Charga, or anyone else like him. Being angry, agitated, and arrogant out of displeasure, means being angry and being overcome by the power of anger. To a monk, refers to one of the same religious order. Intends to strike, means preparing to strike. Even with the palm of his hand, means even intending to slap. It is a Patayantika offense, means that it burns, cooks, and causes one to fall into sentient hells, animals, hungry ghosts, evil destinies, and wrong views.

Moreover, as long as those transgressions are not confessed and not individually confessed, they obstruct virtuous dharmas. Therefore, it is said that these are transgressions. How does one become subject to transgressions? Through internal grasping, through external throwing, and through possessing both. How through internal grasping? If a monk, being angry, agitated, and arrogant, and being displeased, intends to strike a monk with one finger, it becomes a transgression. If he intends to strike with two fingers, three fingers, four fingers, or five fingers, it becomes five transgressions. If he intends to strike with a fist, elbow, shoulder, head, chest, back, waist, thigh, knee, shin, or even the big toe of the foot, it becomes a transgression. Thus, it is through internal grasping. How through external throwing? If a monk, being angry, agitated, and arrogant, and being displeased, intends to shoot an arrow at a monk, it becomes a transgression. Just as intending to shoot an arrow, so too with an iron arrow, a half-iron arrow, an arrow with a *ste'u ka ma* (Tibetan: མདེའུ་སྟེའུ་ཀ་མ་), an arrow like a willow leaf (Tibetan: མདེའུ་བེའུ་སོ་ལྟ་བུ་), a four-cornered arrow (Tibetan: མདེའུ་ཟུར་བཞི་མ་), an arrow like a *karavira* leaf (Tibetan: མདེའུ་ཀ་ར་བཱི་རའི་འདབ་མ་ལྟ་བུ་), an arrow like a bird's heart (Tibetan: མདེའུ་བྱེའུ་སྙིང་མ་), a wheel, a single-pointed *vajra*, a large arrow, a single-pointed weapon, a cypress cone, or even intending to throw a handful of mustard seeds, as many mustard seeds as he intends to throw, that many transgressions occur. Thus, it is through external throwing. How through possessing both? If a monk, being angry, agitated, and arrogant, and being displeased, intends to cut a monk with a sword, it becomes a transgression. Just as with a sword, so too with a *shang lang* (Tibetan: ཤང་ལང་), a single-edged sword, a double-edged sword, a spear, a javelin, a water knife, a blade of grass, or even intending to strike with a broom, as many blades of grass as he intends to throw, that many transgressions occur. Just as with a broom, so too intending to strike with a hook-like structure or a bundle of ropes is the same. Thus, it is through possessing both. For a beginner, a madman, one whose mind is disturbed, and one afflicted by feelings, there is no transgression. These four are transgressions of intending (to attack).
