Monks, is it true that you cut down trees with your own hands and also have them cut down? That you harvest green grass and also have it harvested? That you pick flowers and also have them picked? Venerable Sir, it is so. The Blessed One Buddha rebuked, saying, 'This is not the conduct of a recluse, it is not in accordance, it is not proper, it is not in accordance with the rule; this is not what one gone forth should do.' Then, after rebuking in many ways, the Blessed One addressed the monks, saying: 'Monks, therefore, having seen the ten benefits, the training ground for the disciples of the hearers should be established in the Vinaya,' and so on, as before. My hearers should recite the training ground in the Vinaya thus: 'If one destroys a collection of seeds or a dwelling place of beings, or causes it to be destroyed, there is an offense to be confessed.' A collection of seeds means five kinds of seeds: root seeds, stem seeds, joint seeds, spontaneously growing seeds, and the seed itself as the fifth. What are root seeds? Turmeric, zedoary, cyperus, sweet flag, white calamus, and any other that grows from planting a root. What are stem seeds? Kanikara trees, kapittha trees, ashvattha trees, udumbara trees, nyagrodha trees, and any other that grows from planting a stem. What are joint seeds? Sugar cane, reeds, bamboo, sea purslane, and any other that grows from planting a joint. What are spontaneously growing seeds? Arjaka, sarjaka, paninirjaka, bhustrina, jambhari, and any other that grows spontaneously from planting. What are seeds themselves? Rice, barley, wheat, cowpeas, mustard seeds, and any other that grows from planting a seed. A dwelling place of beings, beings means ants, butterflies, bees, those that eat sesame and chaff, snakes, scorpions, centipedes, and earwigs. A dwelling place means trees.

etc. Those destroying or instigating destruction refer to digging, causing to rot, cutting, piercing, severing, and instigating severing. A downfall means burning, cooking, and causing sentient beings to fall into hell, animals, hungry ghosts, evil realms, bad paths, and wrong views. Furthermore, if the downfall is not confessed and not individually confessed, it will obscure virtuous dharmas. Therefore, it is said to be a downfall. So, how does one become a downfall? In the Intermediate Vinaya, it says: Five seeds and damaging agents, cutting trees and grass heaps, blue and damp, and the continuation of grass, fish manure, mushrooms are faults. If a monk perceives the root seed as a root seed, perceives blue as blue, and cuts, or instigates cutting, it becomes a downfall. If one cuts with doubt about blue, or instigates cutting, it becomes a downfall. If one perceives dry as blue and cuts, or instigates cutting, it becomes a misdeed.
