That which is not the way of practice, not in accordance, not proper, not in accordance with the rules, this is not what a renunciate should do, thus he rebuked. Then, after the Blessed One rebuked in various ways, he spoke to the monks: Monks, therefore, a monk who has a bowl and possesses a bowl should not seek another bowl. Vinaya-vibhaṅga, Volume Thirty-Four. The Blessed One said that a monk who has a bowl and possesses a bowl should not seek another bowl, and then a beggar's bowl was slightly cracked, and he took that and went to Shravasti for alms, and he found some flour, and he filled the bowl with those flours. He found some liquid grain, and he filled the bowl with those grains, and then it leaked out, and the flour became liquid, and those things made the bowl unclean, and then flies surrounded it. Some boys and girls said: The venerable one, like the rich, merchants, and captains, has done the work of increasing the retinue, so the flies surround him and fly away. The householder Anathapindika saw this and said: Children, why do you mock the venerable one? Householder, why do you despise the venerable one so much? The venerable one, like the rich, merchants, and captains, has done the work of increasing the retinue, so the flies surround him and fly away. The householder Anathapindika said to that monk: Venerable one, the Buddha's teachings are so perfect, why are you making such a fuss? Householder, what fuss is there here? Have you seen me enter the house of entertainers, the house of prostitutes, the tavern, the king's palace, and the house of outcasts? Venerable one, then why are you surrounded by children and being mocked? Householder, my bowl is leaking. Then why not seek another bowl? The Blessed One said that a monk who has a bowl and possesses a bowl should not seek another bowl.

When the monks asked the Blessed One, "Is your alms bowl like this?" the Blessed One instructed, "It should be patched with a broken alms bowl." The Blessed One said, "It should be patched with a broken alms bowl." After making this rule, the monks used five kinds of soft patches, namely, brown sugar, bamboo joints, beeswax, camphor, and pigments, to patch the bowl. When these melted again upon encountering heat, the monks asked the Blessed One, who instructed, "Abandon those five soft patches and use five other hard patches to mend it." The monks did not know what the five hard patches were, and the Blessed One instructed, "Long strips, small pieces, patches, crocodile tooth-like shapes, and powder." The monks did not know how many kinds of powder there were, and the Blessed One instructed, "There are two kinds of powder, namely iron powder and stone powder. An iron bowl should be patched with iron powder, and an earthen bowl should be patched with stone powder." They mixed the powder with water to patch it, but it would fall off. The Blessed One instructed, "It should be patched with oil." They burned it too hot, and it would fall off; they burned it too cold, and it would not stick. The Blessed One instructed, "It should be heated just right." If it was too rough, the Blessed One instructed, "It should be polished." They soaked it in water and polished it, but it would also fall off. The Blessed One instructed, "It should be soaked in oil and polished." After the earthen bowl broke, the Blessed One instructed, "It should be patched with brown sugar and clay, and then fired." The Blessed One instructed that it should be patched with those five patches. After making this rule, an alms-seeking monk dropped his earthen bowl from his hand, and it broke into five pieces. He then drilled holes in those pieces, strung them together with thread, and used it for begging. The Blessed One saw that there was no food in the bowl,

After saying, "Do it like that," when he was doing it, he was demolishing and destroying, so that the whole morning was spent. The monks said to him: Venerable one, is this how you do good, only destroying? He said: Venerable ones, the Blessed One has prescribed that a broken bowl should be mended with five strong patches. The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One praised in many ways wanting to learn, respecting learning, and not being stingy with the implements of learning. He then addressed the monks with a Dharma talk that was in accordance with that, closely related to that, and in harmony with that. Then he addressed the monks, saying: Monks, therefore, seeing the ten benefits as they truly are, you should establish the basis of training for the hearers. And so on, as before. Now, the basis of training for the hearers in the Vinaya should be recited as follows: Again, any monk whose bowl does not have five patches, while it is usable, seeks another new bowl because he desires a better one, and if he obtains the bowl, it is an offense entailing forfeiture. That monk should give that bowl to the community of monks. The community of monks should give to that monk whichever is the worst bowl of that community of monks, saying: Monk, you should not bless this bowl, you should not abandon it, you should not give it to others, but you should use it slowly and carefully until it is completely broken. It should be given in this way, and that is the ceremony. Again, "any monk" means this Dharma. Bowl, without five patches, means a bowl that does not have five patches complete. While it is usable, means while it is clearly usable. Because he desires a better one, means because he desires the best, or repeatedly desires. New bowl, means there are two kinds of new bowls: a newly made bowl and a newly obtained bowl. In this context, it refers to both. Other, means the second. Seeking, means is seeking. Bowl
