The twenty-second, showing the abandonment of seeking a bowl. The twenty-second, showing the abandonment of seeking a bowl. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in Shravasti. In Shravasti, there was a young incense seller who had found a bowl that was very bright, well-shaped, and suitable for use. A mendicant, having put on his lower garment in the morning, and taking his bowl and Dharma robes, entered Shravasti for alms. As he was walking through the street after collecting alms, the young incense seller saw him and said: Venerable one, I have found a bowl that is very bright, well-shaped, and suitable for use. If you wish, like food, I have a bowl. Venerable one, if there are other monks who want a bowl, please give it to them. I will give it. Then, the mendicant, having walked for alms in Shravasti, went to Jeta's Grove. After he had eaten his meal and was washing his bowl, he said to the monks: Venerable ones, on such and such a street, there is a young incense seller who has found a bowl that is very bright, well-shaped, and suitable for use. Whoever among you wants a bowl, go there. Not far from there, Ananda was dwelling. He heard this and thought: If some of those with black bowls hear this and run there, it would be bad and they would be reproached. So he said to him: Venerable one, you have eaten food given in faith, and there is no talk other than talk of bowls and talk of Dharma robes. He thought: If all those in the world who possess desire are like Ananda, then he too would temporarily reproach me. If some other elder monks were to hear, they would reproach me even more severely. So he remained without saying anything. Ananda rebuked him, saying: Venerable one, your preceptor and I are good friends, therefore do not reproach me, do not scold me. Elder, if I speak again, please reproach me as well. Venerable one, I am only slightly careless, what is the downfall?

Isn't that a bowl? Venerable Elder, you shouldn't speak either. O Life-endowed one, it is so, but please speak for a moment. Venerable Elder, in a certain street, there was a spice-selling boy who found a bowl that was very clean, well-shaped, and usable. He said, "If there is a monk who needs a bowl, please give it to him." That's all. It only subsided a little. Then, Nede-ga, wearing a robe, walked away quickly. The spice-selling boy saw him coming quickly from afar and thought, "This ragged ascetic is coming so quickly, he must be going to steal my bowl." So he took the bowl and put it under the chest to hide it. Nede-ga saw him hiding the bowl and said, "Good-looking one, is this bowl the son of a blind man? Why are you hiding it?" He stretched out his hand, took the bowl, and said, "Good-looking one, may this generosity become the ornament of your mind, the implement of your mind, the collection of yoga, the attainment of the highest meaning, and become a vessel among gods and humans. Noble one, we merchants live by seeking profit, so we cannot give without payment, but offer it for value. Good-looking one, are you selling the vessel of a mendicant?" He also spoke a verse: If a person obtains a golden vessel with an earthen vessel, Why should he grieve? I see that he is not deceived. Noble one, you say much, but I will not give it without payment. Nede-ga said, "Your excessive attachment to the bowl will cause you to be born in the hidden tumors of flesh-eating demons." As he was scolding him in this way, a householder came towards them and said, "Noble one, I prostrate! Venerable Nede-ga, I prostrate!" Nede-ga said, "Good-looking one, what are you doing with your dry hands?" Noble one, what has Venerable Nede-ga commanded me that I have not done? Buy this bowl, and then?

Thus. That householder said to the incense-selling boy: "Fair face, how much is this bowl worth?" "This much." "I give it to you." The incense-selling boy gave the bowl to the householder, and the householder offered it to Nede. Nede said: "Ah, may this gift cause you to obtain the adornment of the mind, the equipment of the mind, the accumulation of yoga, the supreme meaning, and may you become a vessel among gods and humans." After the householder left, Nede said to the incense-selling boy: "Miser, do you think that Nede cannot use the value of the bowl? Your excessive attachment to this bowl will cause you to be born among the pus-filled pretas. What do you intend to do, noble one? You have obtained the bowl, and I will depart with the value." Nede also took the bowl and went to the monastery, and he showed the bowl to the monks, saying: "Venerable ones, look! How is my bowl?" A young man said: "Venerable, do you not have another bowl?" "Yes." "Then, is it permissible for the Venerable to seek another bowl while having and possessing one?" "By stepping on the throats of enemies." "Does the Venerable also have enemies?" "Because you cannot tolerate my second bowl, you are my greatest enemy." Why do the monks of few desires reproach, revile, throw, and insult the monks, saying that they seek other bowls while having and possessing them? At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, because of this event, this origin, this cause, convened the monastic community of monks, and so on, as before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly commit offenses, and so on, as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked Nede: "Nede, is it true that you seek another bowl while having and possessing one?" "Venerable, yes." The Buddha, the Blessed One, to the
