Therefore, those with life, do not desire or tolerate! Those with life, do not wish to divide the Sangha, but those with life, may you wish for the Sangha to be in harmony! Those with life, be in harmony with the Sangha! The Sangha is harmonious, undivided, universally joyful, without strife, with one view, one voice, like water and milk mixed together, and if you make the Teacher's teachings clear, you will abide in happiness. Those with life, abandon following the division of the Sangha and speaking discordantly, like this, and admonish with entreaties and four karmas. This is the entreaty. The karma should be done as follows: Venerable Sangha, please listen. Kokalika and, Khandadravya and, Katamorakatishya and, Ocean-given, these monks who, for the sake of dividing the harmonious Sangha, are cunningly acting and causing disputes that will lead to division, having correctly taken up and held onto them, befriending them and speaking discordantly, if the monks admonish these, even if the monks admonish these, they still stubbornly hold onto that very basis and are attached to the belief that only they are the truth and others are false, and they subsequently slander. Therefore, the Sangha says to Kokalika and, Khandadravya and, Katamorakatishya and, Ocean-given: Those with life, you knowingly and deliberately befriend and follow those monks who, for the sake of dividing the harmonious Sangha, are cunningly acting and causing disputes that will lead to division, having correctly taken up and held onto them, and do not follow those who speak discordantly. To the monks, say this: Those with life, whether you are virtuous or sinful, do not say anything to this monk. Why is that? Those with life, this monk is a speaker of Dharma, a speaker of Vinaya, this monk correctly takes up and holds onto the Dharma and Vinaya, and subsequently slanders, this monk speaks knowingly and not unknowingly, therefore, whatever this monk likes and tolerates, we also like and tolerate, do not say that, what is

Why is that? Venerable ones, this bhikshu is not a speaker of the Dharma, not a speaker of the Vinaya. Venerable ones, this bhikshu speaks of what is not Dharma, speaks of what is not Vinaya. This bhikshu truly accepts and grasps what is not Dharma and what is not Vinaya, and then applies terms to it. This bhikshu speaks without knowing, because he is not wise. Venerable ones, do not like or tolerate what this bhikshu likes and tolerates. Venerable ones, do not wish to divide the Sangha, but wish for the Sangha to be in harmony. Venerable ones, be in harmony with the Sangha. The Sangha is in harmony, not divided, universally joyful, not arguing, like water and milk mixed together, offering together, reciting together. If you can clarify the teacher's teachings, you will abide in happiness. Venerable ones, abandon those who follow the division of the Sangha and speak discordant words. Thus, make the exhortation and the announcement of the four karmas. Venerable ones, if anyone tolerates the exhortation and the announcement of the four karmas to Kokalika, Khandadhra, Katamorakatishya, and Samudradatta, do not speak. If anyone does not tolerate it, please speak. This is the first statement of the karma. Similarly, repeat it a second and third time. The Sangha tolerates and allows it. The Sangha has made the exhortation and the announcement of the four karmas to Kokalika, Khandadhra, Katamorakatishya, and Samudradatta. In this way, because no one speaks, it is accepted as such. The bhikshus, having heard the teachings of the Blessed One, made the exhortation and the four karmas to the bhikshus Kokalika, Khandadhra, Katamorakatishya, and Samudradatta. Even after making the exhortation and the four karmas, they still insisted on their original views, clinging to them and strongly believing that "only this is true, and the others are false," and then applying terms to it. At that time, the bhikshus reported this matter in detail to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One said to the bhikshus: Bhikshus, Devadatta

My assembly of Śrāvakas is able to divide the harmonious Sangha and also turn the wheel. Like this, my friends, the four monks who speak of disharmony and follow them are: Kokālika, Khandadeva, Kaṭamorakatīṣya, and Samudradatta. Devadatta said to the ascetic Gautama: 'Monks, Devadatta is able to divide my assembly of Śrāvakas and also turn the wheel. Like this, his friends, the four monks who speak of disharmony and follow them are: Kokālika, Khandadeva, Kaṭamorakatīṣya, and Samudradatta.' I heard him prophesying to me.” After hearing this, he said to Kokālika, Khandadeva, Kaṭamorakatīṣya, and Samudradatta: “Kokālika, Khandadeva, Kaṭamorakatīṣya, and Samudradatta, you should know that the ascetic Gautama prophesied to me: 'Devadatta is able to divide my assembly of Śrāvakas and also turn the wheel. Like this, his friends, the four monks who speak of disharmony and follow them are: Kokālika, Khandadeva, Kaṭamorakatīṣya, and Samudradatta.'” They said: “Devadatta, if that is so, it is good.” When he extensively began to strive to divide the harmonious Sangha, the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, regarding this event, with this as the beginning, in this situation, convened the assembly of monks, etc., as before. The Buddha Bhagavan rebuked Devadatta: “Devadatta, is it true that you are striving to divide the harmonious Sangha, and that you have truly accepted and are holding onto the dispute that causes division?” “Venerable One, yes.” The Buddha Bhagavan said: “This is not the conduct of an ascetic, it is not in accordance, it is not appropriate, it is not in accordance with the rules, this is not something that a renunciant should do.” Etc., he rebuked him in the same way as before. Then, the Blessed One, after rebuking him in various ways,
