Tenth, explaining the Sangha remnant that causes division in the Sangha. Tenth, explaining the Sangha remnant that causes division in the Sangha. Vinaya-vibhaṅga, twenty-second fascicle. At that time, the venerable Ānanda was holding a fan beside the Blessed One, fanning the Blessed One with the fan. Then, not long after Devadatta passed away, the Blessed One understood in his heart and said to the venerable Ānanda: Ānanda, go and gather all the monks who dwell near the Light Garden Kalandaka at the assembly hall. The venerable Ānanda, having heard from the Blessed One, "Venerable, as you say," gathered all the monks who dwelt near the Light Garden Kalandaka at the assembly hall, and then went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he bowed to the Blessed One's feet with his head and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the venerable Ānanda said this to the Blessed One: Venerable, all the monks who dwell near the Light Garden Kalandaka have arrived at the assembly hall, and if the time is right, may the Blessed One be aware. Then, the Blessed One went to where the assembly hall was, and having arrived, he sat down on the seat that had been prepared before the Sangha of monks. Having sat down, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, these five are the powerful teachers who exist in the world. Which five? Here, one teacher, although his discipline is not completely pure, claims that his discipline is completely pure and free from all defilements. His hearers, because they live with him, know that this wise teacher, although his discipline is not completely pure, claims that his discipline is completely pure and free from all defilements. However, if we tell others about this teacher, he will be displeased. Why should we serve a teacher who displeases us? This wise teacher

Such a teacher expects the Shravakas to protect them by following them with knowledge and vision. This is the third teacher who exists and abides in the world.
