Then, Devadatta, being arrogant due to gains and reverence, and with his mind completely occupied, had such a sinful thought: 'Now, the Blessed One is old and frail, and will be weary from instructing the four assemblies, namely monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen. Alas, if the Blessed One would entrust the monastic community of monks to me, I could also manage the monastic community of monks well, and the Blessed One could also devote himself to living happily in this very life, thereby reducing his burden.' As soon as he had this thought, his magical powers completely vanished, and although they vanished, he did not know that he had completely lost his magical powers. At that time, the Blessed One's disciple, the son of Kousthila, a monk named Nokjen, practiced the Brahma-faring in the presence of the Blessed One. He cultivated the four Brahma-viharas, abandoning desire for sensual pleasures. Because he dwelt there for a long time, he was born in accordance with the Brahma world. At that time, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana's son was dwelling at the son of Evil-Remover, in the dreadful grove of the Child-Eating Demon Mountain, in the forest of wild animals. Then, Brahma Nokjen, realizing that Devadatta had completely lost his magical powers, just as a strong man would extend or contract his arm, Brahma Nokjen disappeared from the Brahma world and appeared before the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana's son at the son of Evil-Remover, in the dreadful grove of the Child-Eating Demon Mountain, in the forest of wild animals. Then, Brahma Nokjen said these words to the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana's son: 'Venerable Maudgalyāyana's son, please know! Devadatta, being arrogant due to gains and reverence, and with his mind completely occupied, had such a sinful thought: 'Now, the Blessed One is old and frail, and will be weary from instructing the four assemblies, namely monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen. Alas,'

If the Blessed One were to send the Sangha of monks to manage me, I too should straighten out the Sangha of monks. And I thought, if I strive to make the Blessed One dwell happily in this life, his mind will become light. As soon as this thought arose, his magical powers completely disappeared. Although they completely disappeared, he did not know that I had completely disappeared. Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, it would be good to report the matter in detail to the Blessed One. The venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana accepted Brahma Naushikan with silence. Then, Brahma Naushikan realized that the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana had accepted with silence, and bowed his head to the two feet of the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, and immediately disappeared. Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana realized that Brahma Naushikan had left not long ago. How can one keep the mind balanced? For example, just as a strong man bends his arm from being bent, or extends it from being extended, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana disappeared from the son of Evil Abandonment, and dwelt in the Light Garden of Kalandaka in Rajagriha (present-day Rajgir, Bihar), and entered into such a samadhi. Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One, and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana reported in detail to the Blessed One all the things that had happened in his conversation with Brahma Naushikan. When he had reported this, the Blessed One said to the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana: Maudgalyāyana, did you first pervade the mind of Devadatta with your mind and know it? Did Brahma Naushikan not say anything after that? Venerable, yes. I first pervaded the mind of Devadatta with my mind and knew it, and then Brahma Naushikan said

O! When the Blessed One was speaking these words together with the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, Devadatta, together with his four bhikkhu friends, namely Kokālika, Khaṇḍadeviyaputra, Katamorakatissa, and Samudradatta, went to the Blessed One. The Blessed One saw Devadatta from afar. Having seen him, he said to the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana: 'Maudgalyāyana, that Devadatta is coming, and now that foolish man will boast of his own self-realization in front of me, now hold on to the words.' Then, the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One. How can one keep the mind in equanimity? For example, a strong man can stretch his arm from a bent position, or bend it from a stretched position. The Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana disappeared from the Bamboo Grove Kalandaka in Rajagriha, and arrived at the mountain where the evil-abandoned son Dana lived, on the mountain where crocodiles kill their young, in the terrible forest, the forest of wild animals, and entered into such a samadhi. Then, Devadatta went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One, and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, Devadatta said this to the Blessed One: 'Now the Blessed One is old and frail, and has forgotten the teachings for the fourfold assembly, namely bhikkhus, bhikkhunis, upasakas, and upasikas. It would be good if the Blessed One would entrust the Sangha of bhikkhus to me. I will fully instruct the Sangha of bhikkhus, and the Blessed One can also devote himself to the happiness of this life, and be a little more relaxed.' Foolish man, even to Sariputra and Maudgalyāyana, who are practitioners of Brahma, to those who are trustworthy, the Sangha of bhikkhus is not entrusted even for a while, would it be entrusted to you, who are like a corpse, eating saliva? Then, Devadatta thought thus: The Blessed One is
