Devalo Lepa. From those places filled with people and crowds, fill the alms bowl with clean food and drink and good deeds, and then enjoy it completely yourself. If there is any left over, what is the point of dividing it among the monks? Which main person in this land of Magadha should I follow? I thought, who should I follow in this land of Magadha, so that with little effort, the majority of people will also follow? Which main person should I follow? Then, Devadatta thought to himself: This young Ajatasatru, after his father's death, has become the master of his father's throne, power, and wealth. I should follow the young Ajatasatru, and after following him, with little effort, the majority of people will also follow. Then, Devadatta transformed a powerful elephant into a noble son, entered the house of the young Ajatasatru through the door, and came out through the window, entered through the window, and came out through the door. He transformed a powerful horse into a noble son, entered through the door, and came out through the window, entered through the window, and came out through the door. Then, he transformed a shaven-headed monk wearing rags into this, entered the house of the young Ajatasatru through the door, and came out through the window, entered through the window, and came out through the door. The young Ajatasatru also thought: Alas, this is the venerable Devadatta! Then, Devadatta transformed a small boy into a young man with a golden necklace, playing on the lap of the young Ajatasatru, turning back and forth, and the young Ajatasatru also embraced him, kissed him, embraced him tightly, and even spat on him. Like this, Devadatta gained benefits, was respected, and was completely trusted, so he also endured it. The young Ajatasatru also thought: Alas, this is the venerable Devadatta! Then, the young Ajatasatru said: Alas, the venerable Devadatta is even greater than the teacher...

The sinful view of thinking that he has great magical powers became very broad, and having faith in him, he acted for the sake of faith. In the morning and afternoon, he (Devadatta) came with about five hundred chariots and was revered. People offered him about five hundred portions of cooked food in containers. Devadatta was also arranged in the row of meals with about five hundred monks. Then, many monks put on their lower garments in the morning, took their bowls and robes, and entered Rajgir for alms. When many monks were begging for alms in Rajgir, they heard that Devadatta was receiving such offerings and respect: the son of a noble body, King Ajatashatru of Magadha, came with about five hundred chariots in the morning and afternoon and served him. People also offered him about five hundred portions of cooked food in containers. Devadatta was also arranged in the row of meals with about five hundred monks. Having heard this, they also begged for alms in Rajgir and did the work of food. After returning from the afternoon alms, they put down their bowls and robes, washed their feet, and went to where the Blessed One was, went to the feet of the Blessed One, bowed their heads, and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, many monks said these words to the Blessed One: Venerable One, we many monks put on our lower garments in the morning, took our bowls and robes, and entered Rajgir for alms. When we many monks were begging for alms in Rajgir, we heard that Devadatta was receiving such offerings and respect: the son of a noble body, King Ajatashatru of Magadha, came with about five hundred chariots in the morning and afternoon and served him.

Thus I have heard. Monks, do not rejoice in the gains and honors of Devadatta. Why is that? Monks, the gains and honors of Devadatta will kill, and the gains and honors of Devadatta will overwhelm. Monks, just as a water-born tree with abundant fruit will kill, and a water-born tree with abundant fruit will overwhelm, similarly, the gains and honors of Devadatta will also kill, and the gains and honors of Devadatta will also overwhelm. Just as lotus roots and reeds with abundant fruit will kill, and lotus roots and reeds with abundant fruit will overwhelm, similarly, the gains and honors of Devadatta will also kill, and the gains and honors of Devadatta will also overwhelm. Just as a female mule carrying a fetus will kill, and a female mule carrying a fetus will overwhelm, similarly, the gains and honors of Devadatta will also kill, and the gains and honors of Devadatta will also overwhelm. Monks, however much gain and honor Devadatta obtains, for that foolish person, it will become meaningless, harmful, and painful for a long time. Monks, therefore you should train yourselves thus: you should overwhelm gains and honors, and you should not let your minds be completely attached and dwell on the arising of gains and honors. Monks, you should train yourselves in that way. The Blessed One spoke thus, and after the Well-Gone One had spoken thus, the Teacher further spoke thus: A water-born tree is killed by its fruit, lotus roots and reeds are killed by their fruit, a female mule is harmed as if by her own fetus, an evil person is killed by honor. However famous a child becomes, in the end, it will become meaningless. The fame of a child brings killing, and even causes a fall from the peak. That
