Those people filled their bowls and took them away, and they themselves fully enjoyed them. If there was any left over, it would also be distributed to the monks. Therefore, who has the ability to show me the path of magical power? Then, Devadatta went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One, and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, Devadatta said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One, please show me the path of magical power. Then, the Blessed One, having understood that such a sinful desire had arisen in Devadatta, said this to Devadatta: Son of Gautama, strive diligently in higher morality, and you will attain magical powers and other virtues. Son of Gautama, strive diligently in higher mind and higher wisdom, and you will attain magical powers and other virtues. Then, Devadatta thought to himself: The Blessed One does not show me the path of magical power, and having realized this, he bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One, and departed from the presence of the Blessed One, and went to where the venerable Ajnata-Kaundinya was, and having arrived, he said this to the venerable Ajnata-Kaundinya: Venerable one, please show me the path of magical power. The venerable Ajnata-Kaundinya also observed the mind of the Blessed One, and also knew that such a sinful desire had arisen in Devadatta, and so he said this to Devadatta: Devadatta, properly attend to form, and you will attain magical powers and other virtues. Devadatta, properly attend to feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness, and you will attain magical powers and other virtues. Then, Devadatta thought to himself: The venerable Ajnata-Kaundinya also does not show me the path of magical power, and having realized this, he went to the venerable Asvajit, Bhadra, Upali, Mahanama, Yasas, Purna,

Imeda, Valangda (Lord of Cows), Lasang, and other five hundred elders went to where they were, and after arriving, said to the five hundred elders: "Please, elders, show me the path of magical power." Then, the five hundred elders observed the thoughts of the Blessed One and the bhikkhu elders, and also realized that Devadatta had such a sinful desire, so they said to Devadatta: "Devadatta, if you properly attend to the form aggregate, you will gain magical powers and other abilities. Devadatta, if you properly attend to feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness, you will gain magical powers and other abilities." Then, Devadatta thought: "These five hundred elders are not showing me the path of magical power either. Like this, these venerable ones have previously discussed truthfully with the Blessed One, so no one is showing me the path of magical power. Then who else can show me the path of magical power?" At that time, the venerable Kashyapa Ten-Powers was dwelling in the Skagma cave in Rajagriha (present-day Rajgir, Bihar). Then, Devadatta thought: "This Elder Kashyapa Ten-Powers has long been unhypocritical, uncrafty, and upright, and is the Khenpo of my elder brother Ananda, therefore Elder Kashyapa Ten-Powers can show me the path of magical power." After thinking this, he went to where the venerable Kashyapa Ten-Powers was, and after arriving, bowed his head at the feet of the venerable Kashyapa Ten-Powers, and then sat down to one side. After sitting down to one side, Devadatta said to the venerable Kashyapa Ten-Powers: "Please, Elder, show me the path of magical power." Then, the venerable Kashyapa Ten-Powers, without observing the thoughts of the Blessed One and the bhikkhu elders, and that Devadatta had such a sinful desire, showed Devadatta the path of magical power.

Furthermore, Devadatta, during the upper and lower parts of the night, without lying down, diligently practiced, relying on the first dhyana, and achieved supernatural powers through the worldly path. He could transform from one into many, and from many into one. With knowledge and vision, he could experience both light and non-light. He could walk through walls, fences, and mountains without obstruction, like a bird in the sky. On land, he could emerge as if from water, like a bird diving. In water, he could walk without sinking, flowing with the current, like on solid ground. In the sky, he could walk in a lotus position, like a flying bird. He could also emit smoke and blaze, like a great fire. He could emit streams of water from his body, like a great cloud. He could even touch and rub the sun and moon, which are so powerful and radiant, with his hand. Furthermore, Devadatta thought thus: "By what name shall I know the Jambudvipa, the Jambudvipa tree? From that Jambudvipa tree, I shall take Jambudvipa fruits, possessing color, fragrance, and taste, and from the nearby Amalaka gardens, Bibhitaka gardens, and Kapittha gardens, I shall take their fruits, possessing color, fragrance, and taste, fill my bowl and carry them, and enjoy them myself. If there is any left over, I shall also distribute it to the monks. I shall also go to Purvavideha in the east, Aparagodaniya in the west, and Uttarakuru in the north, and take uncultivated and unsown rice grains, fill my bowl and carry them, and enjoy them myself. If there is any left over, I shall also distribute it to the monks. I shall also go among the gods of the Four Great Kings, and among the gods of the Thirty-Three, and take the nectar of the gods, fill my bowl and carry it, and enjoy it myself. If there is any left over, I shall also distribute it to the monks. In whatever country is prosperous,
