The venerable Sudatta thought to himself: "Now there is a terrible famine, and it is difficult for monks and beggars to find food. Even parents find it difficult to give food to their own sons. What need is there to mention beggars? I have relatives who possess great wealth. I should go to the city of Kalandaka, go to my relatives, and have them prepare food for the Sangha, prepare sour porridge and drinks for the Sangha, as well as regular rotating offerings, invitations, eighth-day offerings, fourteenth-day offerings, monthly offerings, and small gifts." Then, the venerable Sudatta, son of Kalandaka, stayed in the countryside as he pleased. Taking his bowl and robes, he traveled to the city of Kalandaka, gradually walking. When he arrived at the city of Kalandaka, he stayed in a hut in the monastery in the city of Kalandaka. Then, the venerable Sudatta, son of Kalandaka, went to his relatives, and when he arrived, he praised the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha in front of them, and had them prepare food for the Sangha, prepare sour porridge and drinks for the Sangha, as well as regular rotating offerings, invitations, eighth-day offerings, fourteenth-day offerings, monthly offerings, and small gifts. After that, the venerable Sudatta, son of Kalandaka, became a monk of the monastery, wearing the three Dharma robes, holding a duster, and begging for alms in order. At another time, at first, only the Sangha of monks was satisfied with coarse food. In the morning, he put on his skirt, took his bowl and robes, and went to the city of Kalandaka to beg for alms. Gradually, while begging for alms in the city of Kalandaka, he returned to his own home. He did not receive alms from his own home and quickly left. At that time, the mother of the venerable Sudatta, son of Kalandaka, had gone out for some business. An old maidservant saw the venerable Sudatta, son of Kalandaka, leaving quickly without receiving alms from his own home.

Having seen this, the mother of the son of Kalandaka, the venerable Good Giving, went to Magadha. Having gone there, she spoke thus to the mother of the son of Kalandaka, the venerable Good Giving: 'Lady, please know that the venerable Good Giving quickly returned to his own dwelling after leaving, and without obtaining alms, without obtaining offerings, he quickly returned.' Then, the mother of the son of Kalandaka, the venerable Good Giving, thought to herself: 'Alas, could it be that the son of Kalandaka, Good Giving, is desirous, or displeased, or wishes to wander about, not seeking the ascetic's way, or is lazy in the ascetic's way, or has become weary, or is doubtful, or is reviling, or wishes to completely abandon the ascetic's way, or is not of one mind?' Thinking thus and realizing this, she came from the city of Kalandaka and went to where the son of Kalandaka, the venerable Good Giving, was. Having gone there, she spoke thus to the son of Kalandaka, the venerable Good Giving: 'Son Good Giving, if you are desirous, or displeased, or wish to wander about, not seeking the ascetic's way, or are lazy in the ascetic's way, or have become weary, or are doubtful, or are reviling, or you wish to completely abandon the ascetic's way, then, son Good Giving, the women's treasures of women, or the women's dowry, or the possessions of women, that great pile of wealth and gold of your mother, where a person standing at one end cannot see a person sitting at the other end, and a person sitting at one end cannot see a person standing at the other end, that is your mother's. Furthermore, your father's unmarked wealth and gold are also in the hundreds, thousands, and hundreds of thousands, not to mention the others. Son Good Giving, come back! Stay and enjoy desires, and also give alms, and also accumulate merit.' Having said these words, the son of Kalandaka, the venerable Good Giving, spoke thus to his mother: 'Mother, I am not desirous, or displeased, or wishing to wander about, but seeking the ascetic's way.'
