Explanation of the First Defeat. Explanation of the First Defeat. Even in hundreds of thousands of kalpas, it is difficult to hear the Vinaya, difficult to obtain holding and grasping, and very difficult to practice. The appearance of the Buddhas and the teaching of the Dharma are also happiness. The harmony of the Sangha is happiness, and the asceticism of those in harmony is happiness. Seeing the noble ones is happiness, and associating with the virtuous is happiness. If one does not see the childish, then it is always happiness. Seeing the virtuous is happiness, seeing the learned is happiness, seeing those liberated from samsara, the Arhats, etc., is happiness. The river of happiness at the entrance is happiness, the person who is accustomed to the Dharma is happiness, the one who has obtained wisdom is happiness, and the one who has exhausted pride and ego is happiness. Those who have determined and subdued their senses, growing old in quiet temples, and the learned in the forests, it is happiness for those whose youth has passed to dwell. To that Shakya Lion, with palms together with ten fingers, the Vinaya was well proclaimed, listen to me for the sake of taming. Having heard, the great sage, should practice as he said, and even the smallest faults should be guarded and practiced. The mind, like a wild horse, is difficult to tame, which is always subdued by diligence. The bridle that matches it, like a hundred sharp nails, is the Vinaya. Those who can stop and not cross the line with words, they are good people and horses, and they will surely win the battlefield of afflictions. Whoever does not have this bridle will never act as he pleases, they are disturbed by the battlefield of afflictions, wandering aimlessly without support. The Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples was without fault and without blisters for twelve years, and the Blessed One also briefly summarized and proclaimed the Pratimoksha Sutra for the disciples: Do not commit all sins, practice all virtues. Tame your own mind, this is the teaching of all Buddhas. The discipline of the body is good, the discipline of speech is also good, the discipline of the mind is also good, the discipline is good in all places. A monk who is protected in all ways is liberated from all suffering. Guarding speech and well restraining the mind, the non-virtue of the body

Doing nothing. If these three paths of action are well practiced, one will attain the path spoken of by the sages. Thus it was declared. When he was thirteen years old, the Blessed One Buddha was dwelling in the village of Kalandaka in the land of Sponging. At that time, in the village of Kalandaka, there was a wealthy man named Good Giving, the son of Kalandaka, who was rich, had many possessions, great enjoyment, was completely possessed of vast and extensive wealth, possessed wealth like that of the son of Vaisravana, and competed with Vaisravana in wealth. He took a wife from the same clan and played with her, rejoiced with her, and enjoyed happiness with her. At another time, he had great faith in the Buddha, great faith in the Dharma and the Sangha, and went for refuge to the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. He abandoned killing and turned away from killing. He abandoned taking what is not given, abandoned sexual misconduct, abandoned lying, and abandoned grain alcohol and mixed alcohol, which are places of intoxication and recklessness, and turned away from grain alcohol and mixed alcohol, which are places of intoxication and recklessness. He continued his previous faith, shaved his hair and beard, put on saffron robes, and, with faith only in what is right, went forth from home to homelessness. Having gone forth in this way, he lived mingling with his relatives as he had done as a householder. Then, the son of Kalandaka, the long-lived Good Giving, thought to himself: Having gone forth into the well-spoken Dharma and Discipline, I live mingling with my relatives as I did as a householder, I have not found anything, it is not a gain, but I have found faults, it is not a good gain. I should take my alms bowl and Dharma robes and go wandering to be separated from my relatives. Then, the son of Kalandaka, the long-lived Good Giving, took his alms bowl and Dharma robes and went wandering to be separated from his relatives. At that time, there was a terrible famine, it was difficult for monks to find food, and it was difficult for parents to give food and care to their children, let alone to monks. Then, Kalandaka...
