With so many attendants, there was not even the sound of coughing, nor the sound of sneezing. The Blessed Lord liked to be quiet, delighted in quiet, subdued by quiet, and praised quiet, so the attendants were also quiet. O god, therefore, may you quickly obtain the excellent great elephant! Thus, in the house of the retinue, there is the light of a butter lamp. Then, the son of the Victorious One, King Ajatashatru of Magadha, quickly mounted the excellent great elephant, and rode it as far as was suitable for riding, and dismounted from the elephant and entered the Jetavana with his feet alone. At that time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the midst of the community of monks, like a lake, clear and without turbidity. Then, the son of the Victorious One, King Ajatashatru of Magadha, went near the courtyard of the retinue, and the young Jivaka went forward and said: Jivaka, where is the Blessed One? O god, the Blessed One is in the midst of the community of monks, like a lake, clear and without turbidity, right there. Then, the son of the Victorious One, King Ajatashatru of Magadha, went to where the Blessed One was, and having gone, he bared one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and with his palms joined together, bowed to where the Blessed One was, and said to the Blessed One: Venerable Blessed One, the community of monks is disciplined and peaceful, may the young physician Jivaka also have such a disciplined and peaceful mind. Great king, well done, well done, it is good that you yourself are delighted. Great king, please sit on your own seat. Then, the son of the Victorious One, King Ajatashatru of Magadha, bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One, and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the son of the Victorious One, King Ajatashatru of Magadha, said to the Blessed One: Venerable Blessed One, if you would allow me to ask questions for the sake of prophecy, I would like to ask some questions. Great king, ask whatever you wish. Venerable one, concerning the place of action and crafts,

Vinaya-vastu, Volume 106. Great King, do you remember ever asking other Śrāmaṇas and Brahmins a similar question before? Venerable sir, I remember. Venerable sir, once I went to where Pūraṇa Kāśyapa was. Having arrived, I asked Pūraṇa Kāśyapa thus: Venerable Kāśyapa, what are the various occupations and crafts, such as: rosary makers, bamboo craftsmen, mat makers, grass craftsmen, trainers, elephant riders, horse riders, chariot makers, swordsmen, archers, attendants, marble players, dancers, and those powerful, brave, and resilient princes who can conquer enemies, as well as those who please others, barbers, and bathers, each of whom makes a living by their craft and occupation, and gives alms, does good deeds, provides for those who need to be provided for, and having obtained and possessed the five qualities of sensual pleasure, they play, rejoice, and indulge in happiness, can such people attain the fruit of the path of a Śrāmaṇa who sees things as they are? When asked thus, he replied: Great King, I think and say thus: there is no giving, no sacrifice, no fire offering, no good conduct, no bad conduct.

No. The fruits of well-done and ill-done deeds do not ripen. There is no this world. There is no other world. There is no mother. There is no father. There are no beings who arise spontaneously. There are no Arhats in the world who have rightly gone, who have rightly entered, who in this very life, by their own super-knowledge, have realized this world and the other world, and having accomplished it, declare, 'I have exhausted birth, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more of this state of being.' Life exists only in this, and it will be cut off later. It will perish and will not arise after death. The body of a man is made of the four great elements. When he dies, his earth body returns to the element of earth, his water body to water, his fire body to fire, and his wind body to wind. The senses follow the sky. Men carry the corpse on a litter with five supports to the cemetery, and it disappears after being burned. The burnt remains become ashes. The bones remain like the color of doves. Thus, what is shown near by the foolish is taken near by the wise in giving. All those who speak of existence are false, lying, and empty. Thus, both the child and the wise will be cut off later, will perish, and will not arise after death. Venerable sir, for example, if someone were asked about mangoes, he would point to figs, and if asked about figs, he would point to mangoes. Similarly, when I asked Purana Kassapa about the fruits of the life of a contemplative, which I had rightly seen, he would answer that there were none. Venerable sir, I thought to myself, 'It is not fitting for a man of wisdom like me, who is honored for his good looks, to openly disparage a contemplative or Brahmin who dwells in the country.' Venerable sir, therefore, I neither praised nor disparaged what Purana Kassapa said, neither praised
