Please grant me a prophecy. Then, the five hundred elders, observing the Blessed One's mind, and the behavior of the monastic elders and Devadatta, knew that he had generated such sinful desires, and said these words to Devadatta: Devadatta, properly direct your mind to form, and you will also possess magical powers and other qualities. Devadatta, properly direct your mind to feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness, and you will also possess magical powers and other qualities. Then, Devadatta thought to himself: Even the five hundred elders have not given me a prophecy of the path of magical powers, could it be that these venerable ones have discussed it with the Blessed One beforehand? Like this, no one has given me a prophecy of the path of magical powers, he thought: Who can give me a prophecy of the path of magical powers? At that time, the venerable Kāśyapa with the ten powers was dwelling in the Deer Park (Venuvana) of Rājagṛha. Then, Devadatta thought to himself: This venerable Kāśyapa with the ten powers has been unwavering, without deceit, acting uprightly, and possessing an upright nature for a long time, and he is also the preceptor of my close relative Ānanda, therefore the venerable Kāśyapa with the ten powers is able to give me a prophecy of the path of magical powers, after thinking this, he went to where the venerable Kāśyapa with the ten powers was, and after arriving, he bowed to the two feet of the venerable Kāśyapa with the ten powers with his head, and then sat to one side. After sitting to one side, Devadatta said these words to the venerable Kāśyapa with the ten powers: Elder, please grant me a prophecy of the path of magical powers. Then, the venerable Kāśyapa with the ten powers, without perceiving the Blessed One's mind, and the behavior of the monastic elders and Devadatta, not knowing that he had generated such sinful desires, gave Devadatta a prophecy of the path of magical powers. Then, Devadatta, without sleeping in the upper and lower parts of the night, through diligence and abiding, relied on the first dhyana and obtained magical powers.

Having accomplished the manifestations of magical power, he experiences with wisdom and vision that one becomes many, and many become one, appearing and disappearing. He goes directly through walls, goes directly through hills, and goes directly through rocks without being obstructed by the body. For example, just as birds fly in the sky, he can also appear in the sky and on the ground; and just as birds are in the water, he can also walk on water without sinking. He can fly cross-legged into the sky, just like a winged bird. He can even touch and rub with his hand those who have great divine transformation and great power, like the moon and the sun. Then, Devadatta thought: Should I take from the Jambudvipa, which is named after the tree called Jambu (Tibetan: འཛམ་བུ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: जम्बु, Sanskrit Romanization: Jambu, Literal meaning: Jambu), those Jambu fruits that are perfect in color, fragrance, and taste, fill my alms bowl, enjoy them myself, and distribute the rest to the other monks? Or, should I take from the nearby Bilva orchard, Kapittha orchard, or sour orchard, those sour fruits that are perfect in color, fragrance, and taste, fill my alms bowl, enjoy them myself, and distribute the rest to the other monks? Or, should I go to Uttarakuru and pick uncultivated rice from there, fill my alms bowl, and then do as mentioned before? Or, should I go to the abode of the Four Great Kings or the Thirty-three Gods, and pick nectar from the heavens, fill my alms bowl, enjoy it myself, and distribute the rest to the other monks? Or, should I take from the prosperous regions, all the way to the places filled with people and beings, pick clean and delicious food, fill my alms bowl, enjoy it myself, and distribute the rest to the other monks? Then, Devadatta thought again: If I could control the chief person of Magadha (one of the sixteen ancient Indian kingdoms), then by controlling him, I could easily control a large number of people in a short time.

Then Devadatta thought to himself, 'This young Ajatasatru, after his father dies, will be placed in his father's throne and power. I should control the mother of the young Ajatasatru, and if I control her, then the great multitude of people will be under my control from a young age.' Then, Devadatta transformed himself into a wise elephant, a wise horse, and a mature monk with shaved hair and wearing patched robes, entering through the door of the young Ajatasatru and emerging from the small window, and entering from the small window and emerging from the door. Sometimes, he would transform himself into a young boy bound with a golden necklace, rolling around in the lap of the young Ajatasatru. Ajatasatru would also hold that young boy and embrace him face to face. Sometimes, if ashes of saliva were put in the food, Devadatta would disappear. This was because he was overwhelmed by the gains and respect, and therefore his mind was attached. Then, the young Ajatasatru became even more inclined towards evil views, believing, 'Alas, Devadatta is greater and more powerful than the teacher (Buddha)!' Because he had faith in him, he worked even harder. He would go to serve Devadatta every morning and evening with about five hundred chariots. He would also prepare about five hundred kinds of food in various places. Devadatta would also sit with about five hundred monks at the dining place. Then, many monks would put on their lower garments in the morning,
