Then one should ask the Blessed One, "Among all bipeds, who is the most excellent?" If the Blessed One is the most excellent of all bipeds, one should not say "It is mine." However, one should accept saying, "You are our Buddha," and one should not regret this. Similarly, one should say, "Among all dharmas that are free from desire, which is the most excellent?" And one should expand in detail to, "Among all assemblies of the Sangha, who is the most excellent?" The story takes place in Shravasti. A householder invited the Buddha and the Sangha of monks to a warm room. At that time, a venerable named Ri, a young novice, was in his prime, had not been ordained for long, had not been fully ordained for long, and had not come to this Dharma and Vinaya for long. He thought, "The Blessed One said that whoever gives with a small amount, or gives with a large amount, or gives with a good offering, or does work with a joyful mind, or rejoices with great faith, all of these will become fortunate." So he thought, "I too will do some work." So he began to chop wood. As he was chopping wood, a poisonous snake came out from a piece of rotten wood and bit his right big toe. He fainted from the poison, fell to the ground, began to vomit, his face changed, and his eyes changed. The Brahmins and householders saw him suffering like this and said, "Wise ones, whose son is this?" Others said, "He is the son of so-and-so." They said, "The Shramana of the Shakya clan has been ordained among the helpless. If he had not been ordained, his relatives would have done something for him." The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said, "Ask the doctor and let him treat him." The monks asked the doctor, and the doctor said, "Give him food mixed with sacred substances." The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said, "If the doctor instructs, give it." The monks gave the food.

Not knowing what kind of things they were, they asked the doctor. The doctor said: Noble ones, your teacher, the Bhagavan, is the all-knowing, all-seeing one, only he knows. The monks then reported this matter to the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan said: Monks, the mixed food is feces, urine, ashes, and earth. Among them, the feces are from young calves that have not been born for long. The urine is also from those calves. The ashes are from five kinds of trees: hard wood, haritaki, bodhi, udumbara, and banyan. The earth is the earth dug from four fingers below the ground. This is the mixed food. Then, the monks made pills from the mixed food and offered them to the venerable ones, but sometimes they did not recover. The monks then reported this matter to the Bhagavan.
