He who has compassion for inferior and evil beings, who delights in remote dwellings, the sole object of offerings in the world will arise. At that time, a self-enlightened Buddha named 'Subduer of Afflictions' appeared in the world, and he dwelt near the Deer Park spoken of by the sages in the city of Varanasi. In the early morning, he put on his lower garment, took his bowl and Dharma robes, and went to Varanasi for alms. A Brahmin boy also entered a house for alms for food, but he did not receive food and came out. The self-enlightened Buddha, free from afflictions, entered that house for alms. The Brahmin boy saw him enter and thought: I will see what this renunciate is doing. So he returned and followed him, sitting by the door. After a while, the householder's wife saw that the self-enlightened Buddha was beautiful in body and pleasing in mind. Then she developed faith and cleaned his bowl, filling it with delicious food and drink. As he took it and came out, the Brahmin boy saw him and said: Hey, renunciate, let me see what kind of alms you have obtained. He did not think, because the manifestation of wisdom does not allow, so he showed it. Then, that person with a mind strongly attached to jealousy struck his hand with his palm, and the bowl fell, the food spilled on the ground, and the Brahmin boy trampled it with his feet. The self-enlightened Buddha said to him: Good sir, why do you waste the food? If you were begging, I would give it to you. He reviled the self-enlightened Buddha many times, then returned and went to dwell in the Deer Park spoken of by the sages. Monks, what do you think? At that time, the Brahmin of that time was myself. Because I had a mind strongly attached to jealousy and cut off the food of the self-enlightened Buddha, the ripening of that karma, from what is called 'many years' until being cooked in the hells of sentient beings, is as described before. Only from that remainder of karma, even now that I have attained perfect and complete enlightenment, I was cut off from food in the land of Sala. What is the activity of the venerable Bhagavan?

If done so, due to the maturation of that activity, a wandering beautiful woman accused, saying it was not true. The Blessed One said: Monks, the Tathagata himself, in previous lifetimes, performed various actions and accumulated them, from what is called "obtaining accumulation" to what is called "becoming fruit," is as before. Monks, in the past, when the lifespan of beings could reach eighty thousand years, until the fully enlightened Buddha named Vipashyin appeared. In the teachings of that Buddha, the Blessed One, two brothers became monks, named Dwelling Place and Bharadvaja. Then, Dwelling Place, through diligence, effort, and exertion, abandoned all defilements and personally realized the state of an Arhat. Bharadvaja also, through reading and reciting, became proficient in the three pitakas, possessing reason and fearless eloquence in the Dharma talks of the three pitakas. He persuaded a patron, who built a monastery equipped with all necessities for him. Then, he sent a message to his brother Dwelling Place, saying: Please come together. Hearing this, he came. Then, that patron saw him, peaceful in conduct, beautiful in body, and joyful in mind. Seeing this, he developed great faith, and having developed faith, he satisfied him with food offerings and offered him a pair of silk suitable for a great person. Then, Bharadvaja became jealous, thinking: I am the one who precedes in all of this, but he has never given me silk even once. This person has only come for a short time and has been offered a pair of silk. So, he began to look for faults in his brother Dwelling Place. Realizing this, he thought: This person is of a jealous nature, and if I do not give him this pair of silk, he will experience even more displeasure. Even if I give it to him, he will still diligently seek faults. A maidservant of that patron went to the monastery to do cleaning work. Bharadvaja said to her: Girl, I will give you this pair of silk; you do as I say.

Ka. He said, "Holy one, what should I do? Wear these two clothes of mine and do the sweeping work of the house. If the householder asks you, 'Where did you get these two clothes?' you should say, 'The holy one who dwells here gave them to me.' If he asks, 'Why?' you should say, 'Do male officials also ask why they give to women?'" 1. Then he did everything as he was instructed. Then that householder developed faith in the one who dwells there, and those great beings, because of their lack of respect, were afraid of him and got up and left. Monks, what do you think? Who was Bharadvaja at that time? It was I myself. Because I then falsely accused the Arhat, the ripening of that karma, for many years, etc., until I was cooked in the hells of sentient beings, as before. Now, even when I have attained complete enlightenment, I am falsely accused by the wandering woman Me. Venerable one, what deed did the Blessed One do that the Brahmin girl Tsa-mi falsely accused him because of the ripening of that deed? The Blessed One said: Monks, the Tathagata himself, in other previous lives, has done and accumulated deeds, common and uncommon, and has obtained gatherings, etc., until they become fruits, as before. What is common? Monks, in the past in Varanasi, there was a Brahmin who had gone beyond the Vedas and the branches of the Vedas, and he taught the secret words of the Brahmins to five hundred Brahmin boys. He was especially respected by the people living in Varanasi, revered as a teacher, remembered and offered to, and regarded as an Arhat. At that time, a hermit with five superknowledges traveled to Varanasi, and the people living in Varanasi saw his beautiful body and pleasing mind. Having seen him, all the people developed faith and joy, whatever their giving or activity, or whatever is for the sake of the next world.
