The mind that clings to desire cannot be completely subdued. How does the pain of desire arise? Some ways cause it to increase, and some ways cause it to subside. When the elephant trainer could not restrain that noble elephant in all places, he said to the king: "Your Majesty, let this elephant pretend to grab a tree branch." Then the king and the trainer grabbed the tree branch and sat down. After that, they escaped from Diushiwa (place name) and became safe, and the king said to the trainer: "You have offered me a noble elephant that has not been tamed." He said: "Your Majesty, I have tamed it very well, but it smelled the scent of the forest female elephant and could not listen. Your Majesty, that is the case, but after thinking, it will leave soon." After that, the elephant got rid of its drunken state, and after seven days, it remembered its thoughts and came back to its place and sat down. After that, the elephant trainer hurriedly said to the king: "Your Majesty, that elephant has come." The king said: "You have not tamed it." "Your Majesty, it has been tamed." "What is the proof?" "I will make it perform in front of Your Majesty." So he took a pair of iron tongs that had been burned red in the furnace, brought them to the elephant, and began to make it pick them up. After that, when he started to pick it up without hesitation, the elephant trainer said: "Your Majesty, it can be picked up, but it will die." The king said: "Alas, wise man, what is the reason that such a tame elephant distracts us?" "Your Majesty, didn't I say before that I tamed the body, not the mind? I tame the body, not the mind." The king said: "Have you seen or heard of anyone taming the mind?" Encouraged by that god, he said: "Your Majesty, there are those who tame the body and those who tame the mind, and those are the Buddhas, the Bhagavat." To destroy the faults caused by desire, many people strive hard, but knowing that they cannot do it, they give up their efforts and retreat. There and there, even though many such efforts have been made, they cannot eradicate the forest of desire's greed from its roots.

It will not change. Those who wish to destroy desire, some abandon all places. Others who wish to destroy it, gladly satisfy the senses. Gods and non-gods, humans, lions, tigers, and snakes, and countless insects, butterflies, and all these worlds, are bound in mind by the extremely fine ropes of desire, and in this dense multitude of beings, they revolve endlessly like a wheel. I tame such an elephant, beautiful in appearance and perfectly complete, by various means. O King, even tangible things cannot subdue the subtle mind, and ascetics cannot subdue it with water currents. Taming elephants, but not subduing the formless, subtle mind, ascetics cannot subdue it by drinking water currents, then who can control the formless mind? Is there in the human world? Who can control the formless mind? Together they exist in the human world, the great king, the great Buddha, who has abandoned afflictions, is brave, and has power, and those who follow him in the same way, only they can control this formless mind. Then, King Light-Victory, having heard of the diligence and power of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, gave alms and accumulated merit, and made the aspiration to attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment: "May I, through this vast almsgiving, become a self-born Buddha among beings, and deliver those beings whom the past kings have not delivered. May I, through the merit arising from treating beings well or giving alms, attain Buddhahood and completely liberate the world from the plague of desire." Great King, what do you think? The King Light-Victory of that time was myself at that time, and I first generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment there. Venerable one, to which perfectly enlightened Buddha did the Bhagavat first offer alms in order to seek unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment? Great King, in the past there was a city called Extensive, and in the city of Extensive there was a potter named Extensive Light.
