Take the vows associated with it. The so-called eight branches are: killing, stealing the wealth of others, non-celibacy, lying, drinking adulterated alcohol, singing, dancing, music, adornment, large beds, and abandoning food. These are the precepts of the vows. Or, for a lama who possesses the three vows, after prostrating, the lama says, "Living beings should not be killed." By giving this vow, protect it for one year and one month. This is related to the previous four. Then, until enlightenment, well observe the five precepts, and for one year and one month, firmly uphold the vows. In that, "Then, until enlightenment" means, with the aspiration and action, generate the mind of a layperson. In front of monks or lamas, after prostrating, with the actions of a layperson, take those vows. A layperson who practices celibacy is one who protects the eight branches for as long as they live. Protecting some branches is the norm. It is said that the four root vows and intoxicating substances, as well as the five precepts, should be well protected. That is, for one year and one month, firmly uphold the above vows. Then, a novice monk or a fully ordained monk, well abiding in the precepts, do not abandon the year or month, take the broken vows. The meaning of this is that after that, the novice monk, for the Khenpo and the Sangha, completely eliminates the obstacles, and with respect for the Three Jewels, takes and protects the ten abandonments and their retinue. The fully ordained monk, in front of three monks, takes the two hundred and fifty-three vows and protects them. Then, "Well protect your own precepts." Then, for the sake of the tantric vows, do not abandon, and within a year or a month, take and confess the broken vows. The Pratimoksha vows, whoever abides well in them, the wise ones at all times, will not abandon them even for the sake of their lives. The meaning is that the Pratimoksha vows are, the aggregate of formations, the aggregate of consciousness, knowing shame and embarrassment. After stabilizing by reversing the mind on habitual tendencies, after the vows of the individual of reliance are well established, the wise one is the one who knows how to take, protect, and establish. Even for the sake of life, do not abandon,

Even if life is lost, one should not abandon one's vows. If someone becomes accustomed to this, when abiding in a higher training, then one is freed from the name of the lower one. So it is said. If someone becomes accustomed to this, it means that the individual who is the basis should first gradually become accustomed to the vows of lay practitioners, upasakas, and individual liberation. So it is said. When abiding in a higher training, one is freed from the name of the lower one, which means that when abiding in a great abandonment, the small things to be abandoned are completely gone, because the higher pervades the pervaded, and the meaning dwells in a special way, that is, the meaning of the lower pervades the higher in the manner of a result, just as the root, stem, leaves, fruit, and seeds pervade. Also, because the higher is the main one, it is said that one is freed from the name of the lower one. Initially, giving is what is to be learned, and twelve things are perfectly possessed. So it is said, this is the teaching of the discipline of benefiting sentient beings, that is, in front of the lama or deity, with auspiciousness, generating the mind of benefiting sentient beings, just as the protectors of the three times, in what way did they truly realize enlightenment, taking vows with rituals, practicing in the manner of the six perfections. It is connected with this sentence. Giving has twelve things, the giving of Dharma has the explanation of meaning, pen, ink, and four volumes of scriptures. The giving of material things has wealth, possessions, food, and clothing, these two. The giving of refuge has, life, road, protection from fear, and loving-kindness, these four, totaling twelve. Discipline has nine aspects, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom, three each, taught in three ways. This meaning refers to the benefit of vows and virtues, which is related to the abandonment of body, speech, and mind. Patience is the patience of believing in the profound Dharma, enduring suffering, and not minding harm done. Diligence is armor, application, and completion, three. Meditation is abandoning faults, obtaining freedom, and abiding in reality, three. Wisdom is hearing, thinking, and meditating. The sorrows of others, etc., all turn into the benefit of sentient beings, and even for the sake of life, one does not abandon it. So it is said, the sorrows of others, refers to evil people who do evil, etc., first is diligence, wisdom, and compassion.
