Song Five. Emaho! Nowadays, due to the abundance of small instruction teachers, although many know a little bit, they are skilled at deceiving the appearances of this life, indulging in pleasure, and not holding impermanence and death in their hearts. Therefore, many are attached to just knowing a little bit. Although they receive many instructions, they are still ashamed to review them. They are not afraid of sin, and their behavior is worse than ordinary people. Receiving instructions is instead used by others to expose their shortcomings. Because they lack the foundation of renunciation meditation, although they know the crossroads, if they do not walk, it is like not being able to meet Jowo (referring to Atisha). There are three types of beings: superior, middling, and inferior. Superior beings do not need to abandon worldly affairs. They mix worldly affairs with practice and meditate. They do not abandon sensual pleasures but transform them into the path, like King Indrabodhi. Middling beings mostly abandon worldly affairs, maintain the conduct of a renunciate, and practice. The affairs of food, clothing, and possessions are mostly for Indian and Tibetan panditas and lamas. Inferior beings cannot accomplish anything with two minds. They cannot manage both Dharma and worldly affairs. They abandon this life, turn their backs on food and clothing, and meditate, like the biographies of Milarepa and Gotsangpa. No matter how these three act, if they can protect their nature, without abandoning it and practicing, then realization will arise. However, this also depends on each person's disposition and abilities. What appears to one person may not appear to everyone. Some people develop deep realization due to faith, some sometimes appear and sometimes have clumsy methods, and some gradually improve. However, I will now explain the way of appearance step by step. First, the mind never stops for a moment. It wanders everywhere, thinking about what it shouldn't think about, and not thinking about what it should think about. At this time, sit with your body straight and relaxed, watching where it goes, like setting up a sentry post, it will return and stay for a while. Both staying and moving are quiescence. Realizing its essence as emptiness is vipashyana. Staying, moving, or emptiness itself, if you realize that they are inseparable and one, then it is union. After realizing this, when practicing, sometimes it flickers like a spark. When it stays, joy arises, thinking that this is one's own mind. Sometimes it does not stay, but is turbulent and wild like the wind. Even when looking, nothing can be seen, a chaotic mess, giving rise to displeasure, thinking that it is not this or that. At that time, grasp any arising thought, observe where it comes from, where it goes, and where it stays.

Emptiness is not found by searching. For example, when you cut a bamboo and look at it, you realize that all bamboos are empty inside. Likewise, one conceptual thought is realized as empty, all conceptual thoughts are the same as that. There is no joy in abiding, no displeasure in moving. Just as there is no difference between water and waves, there is no difference between abiding and moving, look at the nature of whatever arises. If it is wild and turbulent, relax the body and mind. If it is dull and unclear, look with focus. Then, the movement gradually decreases. Sometimes it flashes like a spark, sometimes it stops. Even if it flashes, it quickly returns to the state of abiding. This is called attachment to abiding. Then, when cultivating that practice, it is very easy and clear. For example, just as the ocean is not harmed by waves, it is not harmed even if a slight movement arises. Such things sometimes happen and sometimes do not. Sometimes it is difficult even to meditate and maintain the body posture, sometimes it appears like that even without meditating. Then, the body is comfortable and the mind is comfortable. Ordinary activities do not usually interfere with it. From then on, the desire to meditate is found. Sometimes it even happens in dreams. If you think, "My experience and realization are good," then strong attachment and clinging arise. Do not be attached to that, but look at its nature. Appearance is bliss, and nature is emptiness, the two are inseparable, the great seal of bliss and emptiness arises. Attachment and clinging are the cause of being born as a desire realm god. Some people see conceptual thoughts as enemies and think that not thinking anything is meditation. That is called the view of the Chinese Heshang. Not thinking anything, staying dull, is similar to cessation, it is the cause of being born as an animal. Even though there is something to remember, not allowing the memory to arise, gathering the consciousness in the heart and abiding, that is called cessation, it is the path of the Hearers. Therefore, do not deliberately stop the movement, and do not deliberately encourage the movement, look at the nature of whatever arises. By looking, if nothing is seen, then that is seeing the ultimate truth of emptiness. In the state of not seeing, look at the absence of anything to see. Sometimes even when looking, it is not clear, it is vague. The movement is dull and turbulent, and the heart is not happy. This way of meditation is also like rowing without oars. Some doubts and thoughts arise in the mind. That itself is a rough experience, there is no harm. Relax the body and mind, and direct the gaze to the sky. The sky is blue and clear.
