Trans. That mind-nature is also never demonstrable. Like an illusion, it is not shown in a formless place. The wise seek the dharma-nature of the mind. With what does the mind seek the mind? He does not see the dharma-nature of the mind. Thus it is said. From the Tantra of the Great Perfection, the Radiant Blaze of the Vast Expanse: For the sake of distinguishing the root of the mind, Do this one-pointed contemplation. Awareness, unspoken, is the dharmakaya. In this, there is no arising, dwelling, or going. That which is called mind, the moving, moving one, This vague, flickering, fluttering one, From where does it arise in the beginning? Where does it dwell in the middle, and where does it go in the end? What is its shape and color like? Look at the outer, inner, and intermediate, broken and separated. Thus it is said. In the Consequence: In the beginning, the place of the mind's arising, And in the middle, the dwelling, and in the end, the going, After definitely examining the three, Taming the mind is beneficial to the mind. This is the meaning of what is said. In the Heart Drop of the Vast Expanse: The initial cutting off of the three sources of arising, dwelling, and going: For each one, practice contemplation and abiding meditation. In the beginning, for the place of the mind's arising, Contemplate and meditate on the objects of external appearance. Outer and inner, container and contents, earth, stones, mountains, rocks, plants, forests, mountains, foothills—in short, from where did they arise, how did they arise? What is the manner of arising? Examine with reason and contemplate well. Then again, within one's own body, in all the upper and lower limbs, organs, and inner and outer parts, from where did they arise? How do they dwell? Examine well. Then practice abiding meditation. Examine the mind-nature well upon oneself. This so-called mind, not remembering nine, remembering nine, not being aware, being aware nine—from where did you arise? What is your nature? Thus, examine well one's own essence. Thus, the dwelling place and, all the places of going should be thoroughly investigated, and especially for beginners, the bottom line should be thoroughly cut off. Furthermore, how does this mind-nature, the true dharmakaya, wander and be deluded in the six realms of beings? What is its essence? Or its color? Or its shape? Or its nature? Furthermore, how does this moving thought arise, from where does it arise? Is it established as a real thing or not? If it is established, how is it established? If it is not established, is it emptiness, or how is it? And so on, examine. Then again, if it is established, what is its nature? What is its form, color, and so on? Is it emptiness?

Then, how is it empty? Is it empty like the sky? Is it empty like wind and rocks? Or, how can it be empty to be properly examined? Then again, are mind and concept one or different? If one, then appearance is empty, how do places and movements arise separately? Whence comes the time of separation and the place of separation? Whence comes the root of delusion? Who made the self and other? These should be examined well. Like this, examine until a decisive, pure question arises. Moreover, Chöje Rangjung Dorje said: In general, since there is no certainty when one will die, without thinking too much, look at the pith instruction that decides everything at once! Moreover, if great bliss is not realized in the mind, it is useless to speak of it. If discernment is not settled in the mind, it is useless to be skilled in terminology. If the yogi is not seen directly, it is useless to meditate on inference. Moreover, since the root of everything is important, one should also look at one's own awareness. Moreover, Geshe Jayulwa said: If the fire of the stove is extinguished, the smoke in the wall crevices will naturally stop. He said, cut off elaboration from within. Gyalwang Rinpoche said: It is not like the analytical meditation of a pandita, but the analytical meditation of a yogi looking inward, cutting off superimpositions from within. Je Khachö Wangpo said: Hey, fortunate one, leave your present mind completely in a single point, and look at the nature of that which is left. What is it like? If you think that nothing is established, then it is invisible. Then, who is the one who holds? Is that not your own mind's conceptualization? Even so, if you look at it and think it is invisible, then look at the one who thinks that it is invisible. Look at the one who looks, and look again at the one who looks! Just because it is not seen, it is not non-existent, like a treasure in the ground. Therefore, what is the color of that mind? What is its shape? What is its nature, is it existent or non-existent? Is it both or neither? Is it male or female or hermaphrodite? Discern it thoroughly! If you cannot ascertain its abiding, then deliberately let the mind change, and look carefully at the nature of that which changes! If you still cannot see the nature of the mind with just that, then look again at the basis and support of that mind! Does it arise from within the body? Or does it arise from other external appearances?
