If it arises from there, what will the great demon do to me? If one does not completely abandon self, one cannot get rid of suffering. Just as one cannot get rid of burning if one does not abandon fire. Therefore, the root of "I" and "mine" must be cut off. The root of "I" and "mine" arises from this form aggregate. Therefore, one must search for where "I" and "mine" are in this aggregate, and how "I" and "mine" exist. As Nagarjuna and others said: As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, there will be clinging to self. If there is clinging to self, there will be karma, and from that karma, rebirth will occur again. And in the Ratnavali it says: Those who are attached to the discriminations of form, etc., examine permanence, and regard them as things dependent on self, they will not cease the cycle of birth and death, they will fall deeply into the evil realms. Moreover, it is more important to tame one's own mind than to tame elephants, wild horses, and unruly mules. It is more excellent to conquer self-grasping than to win a battle with a million soldiers. In the Dhammapada it says: The elephant among elephants, the Sindhu horse, and whoever tames mules, are not as good as taming oneself. Whoever is well-tamed, cuts the bonds and becomes liberated. Those vehicles cannot reach that place. Like a good horse being tamed and trained, one should only tame oneself. Whoever is well-tamed reaches the far shore of all sufferings. Only oneself is one's own master, oneself is one's own refuge, therefore one should tame oneself. Dwelling alone in one place, with simple bedding, living idly alone, dwelling in the forest, one should tame oneself alone. One who conquers thousands upon thousands in battle, one who conquers oneself, is the true victor. Thus it is said. So, is "I" and "mine" the body or the mind? It needs to be examined. Names are temporarily given. If the name is changed, will "I" change? If a good name is given, will "I" become good? If a bad name is given, will "I" become bad? So, is this body "I" and "mine"? Dissect this body from head to toe, limb by limb, piece by piece, and search carefully. Examine the internal organs carefully from each part. And also the external earth, water, fire, and wind.

Or where does it reside? Be sure to determine. The Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra says: First, the layer of skin, distinguish it with your own wisdom. From the network of flesh and bones, separate it with the sword of wisdom. After separating the bones as well, observe all the way to the soles of the feet. And ask yourself: What essence is there in this? The Mūlamadhyamakakārikā says: If the aggregates were the self, they would be subject to arising and ceasing. If the aggregates were other than the self, they would not have the characteristics of the aggregates. And so on, extensively explained. Therefore, the body, there is neither self nor what belongs to self in this, because after the body is decomposed into its parts, there is no essence the size of a sesame seed called self or what belongs to self anywhere. Then must the self and what belongs to self be the mind? Therefore, the mind should be sought. The Samādhirāja Sūtra says: Whoever wishes to be liberated from the bonds of all suffering, and desires the bliss of the perfect Buddha, should steadfastly and diligently investigate whether the mind has inherent existence or not. And, the Abhisamayalankara says: Before the Bhagavan Vairocana, the Bodhisattva Vajrapani asked: Bhagavan, where should Bodhi and omniscience be sought? Through what can one realize Bodhi? The Bhagavan replied: Secret Lord, omniscience and Bodhi should be sought in one's own mind. And, the Ārya Ratnamegha Sūtra says: The mind precedes all dharmas, and if one fully understands the mind, one will fully understand all dharmas. And, the Dharmadhātuvibhāga says: Is this mind blue? Yellow? Red? White? Green? Like the color of crystal? Is it real? Is it unreal? Is it permanent? Is it impermanent? Does it have form? Is it formless? One should examine each one individually. Thus it is said. The Kāśyapaparivarta says: One should seek the mind completely in this way: What is this mind that is so attached, hateful, or deluded? Is it past, future, or something that has already happened? And so on, extensively explained. Moreover, the Sutra of Thirty-Three says: All of the three realms are made of mind.
