It merely brings the harm of uninterrupted suffering. Just as, with the rope of complete mindfulness, if the elephant of the mind is firmly tied, all fears will disappear, and all virtues will come into hand. Just as, my gains and respect, body and life can be relinquished, and other virtues can also be relinquished, but the mind must never be relinquished. For those who wish to protect the mind, mindfulness and awareness are essential, even if facing life-threatening situations, protect them. I prostrate with folded hands in this way. For the state of body and mind, one should repeatedly examine. In short, that is the characteristic of guarding awareness. Thus it is said. The root of tranquility is meditation, and the essence of the Sutra Pitaka is the training of the mind. This also has four aspects, as stated in the Ornament of Liberation: the first dhyana, the second, the third, and the fourth. Among these, the first dhyana is with investigation and analysis. The second dhyana is endowed with joy. The third dhyana is endowed with mental happiness. The fourth dhyana is endowed with equanimity. Thus it is said. So, how to cultivate these four dhyanas, and what are their signs and benefits? In the Twenty-Five Thousand Verse Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, the Blessed One taught: "Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva dwells in the perfection of meditation, secluded from desires, secluded from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, with initial application and sustained application, born of seclusion, possessing joy and bliss, dwells having attained the first dhyana. With the pacification of initial application and sustained application, with inner clarity, with unification of mind, free from initial application and sustained application, born of samadhi, possessing joy and bliss, dwells having attained the second dhyana. He becomes detached from joy, abides in mindfulness and awareness, dwells in equanimity, experiences happiness with the body, which the noble ones describe as abiding in mindfulness, contemplating happiness with equanimity, thus cultivating the third dhyana free from joy, and dwells therein. He abandons happiness, also abandons suffering, and with the previous disappearance of pleasure and displeasure, happiness also

There is also no suffering, so he approaches and abides in the fourth dhyana, which is pure in equanimity and mindfulness. He does not cling to the dhyana and its limbs as signs. With his mind thus equipoised, he experiences various kinds of magical powers. He can also shake this great earth violently. He becomes one and becomes many. He becomes many and becomes one. He experiences appearing and disappearing. He goes unimpeded through walls, fences, and mountains, just as a bird flies in the sky. He also walks in the sky, just like a winged bird. He also appears upwards on the ground and dives downwards, just like in water. Thus, and so on, various signs and qualities are extensively taught. The venerable Garland of Merit said: In general, the first of the nine methods of abiding the mind in the sutras is to cultivate the desired quiescence, focusing on one point. Then, through aversion to the lower grounds and delight in the higher grounds, and through the seven protective intentions, one cultivates the first to the fourth dhyanas in sequence. After the fourth dhyana is accomplished, one cultivates the five superknowledges from the path of superknowledges. Although this is common to both non-Buddhist ascetics and the inner Buddhist sutras and tantras, this quiescence, which is cultivated through the stages of instruction such as the Great Seal, arises from the essential points of the oral instructions. Its nature is the single-pointedness of the desiring mind, and it possesses similar aspects of all four dhyanas. Although it is not difficult to cultivate the divine abode dhyanas on top of this, one first cultivates only a portion of quiescence as the basis for insight. One does not primarily cultivate mundane dhyana alone. Thus it is said. Therefore, one must abandon distraction and establish the bodily posture. The Great Instruction says: Establish the seven dharmas of Vairochana's body. The seven dharmas are: legs in the lotus position, hands in equipoise mudra, placed four fingers below the navel, elbows straight without bending, shoulders spread like the wings of a garuda, neck bent like an iron hook with the chin pressing against the throat knot, spine straight like an arrow, eyes gazing at the sky four fingers in front of the tip of the nose, without blinking.
