Rest on that, remembering its qualities. If distracted, recognize the causes of distraction from it. Abide in it without effort, immersed in its state. When the scattering of thoughts subsides, the mind remains one-pointedly focused, that is calm abiding (Śamatha). This is common to outsiders, Bonpos, Śrāvakayāna, and Sautrāntikas. After blocking thoughts, due to the force of habit, one abides spontaneously without scattering. This must first arise, but it itself is not the meaning of Mahāmudrā and Dzogchen. It is common to the view of the Chinese Heshang, the four meditations of the heretics, and the cessation of the Śrāvakas. Why is it not Mahāmudrā and Dzogchen? Because it is not the meaning of non-contrivance, because it is contrived, and because there is the clinging to the idea that "the mind abides." Sambhūta says: "Thoughts are great ignorance, they are the cause of falling into the ocean of Saṃsāra. If you abide in non-conceptual Samādhi, it will be clear and stainless like the sky." The Vajra Garland says: "From the complete cessation of thoughts, great bliss truly arises." There are two ways to enter this. In this case, when thoughts subside, the mind abides spontaneously, that is calm abiding. The Ornament of Liberation says: "Calm abiding is relying on true Samādhi, placing the mind on the mind, abiding in its own place, abiding spontaneously, clearly." These cover most of the objects of calm abiding. The Great Vase is not explained here because it cannot be measured by ordinary people. The Samādhirāja Sūtra says: "Holding the mind on the body of the Buddha has immeasurable benefits." The Samādhi Sūtra, in which the Buddha now manifestly abides, says: "Meditating on the body of Amitābha has immeasurable benefits," and because it is closely related to this Dharma, meditate on a single body of Buddha Amitābha in front of you and focus your awareness on it one-pointedly. Try to keep your mind abiding on it without scattering. If you still cannot grasp the object, focus your awareness on a white drop the size of a mustard seed in the center of your heart, which is full of light, and try to abide. If you still cannot abide, do not think of anything, relax your mind, cut off the thoughts of the three times, gather your mind on the mind, and relax in non-elaboration.

Thus abide. Moreover, not contemplating on past dharmas is the door to liberation, emptiness. Not welcoming future events and abiding, is wishlessness. Whatever arises in the present, releasing it without clinging to anything is signlessness. This is the practice of shamatha, the three doors to liberation. In the Sutra of the Good Night, it also says: 'Ananda, not recollecting what has passed, not hoping for what is to come, and not discriminating what is present, this is called abiding in the Sutra of the Good Night.' Also, in the root verses, it says: 'Look at your own mind with your own mind.' Also, in the root verses of the Great Instruction, it says: 'The seven points of posture for meditation are established without fault. The essential point of mind is to cut off the proliferation of thoughts of the three times. Whatever arises, let it be naturally without distraction, abiding without effort.' As it is said, one should try as much as possible to let the mind abide in its natural state. By doing so, the three states of superior, middling, and inferior will arise in sequence. With this, the dharma session on shamatha is concluded.
