The throat is like the eye of a needle, so that even a horse's tail cannot pass through. Even if it can pass through a little, there is the suffering of not being able to fill the stomach, which is as big as a mountain. The remaining pretas are also in the wilderness, empty valleys, cliffs, and caves of the human realm. In winter, even the sun is cold. In summer, even the moon is hot. All the water is dry, and all the trees have no fruit. Even snot and phlegm cannot be obtained as offerings. Some pretas who roam in the sky, although they have great magical powers and enjoyments, They constantly suffocate people with the appearance of hunger and thirst. All kinds of ghosts are pretas. The lifespan is five thousand or twenty-five thousand years, counting one day for one month of human life. The Kindred Epistle says: Even pretas are afflicted by the poverty of desire, and the suffering it produces is never interrupted. The suffering caused by hunger, thirst, heat, cold, fatigue, and fear is extremely unbearable, and one should rely on it. Some have mouths as small as the eye of a needle, and stomachs as large as mountains, afflicted by hunger. Even a little bit of discarded impure matter, they do not have the power to seek it. Some are skin and bones, and their bodies are dry, like the top of a dry palm tree. Some burn at night and fire blazes from their mouths. The food is the suffering of burning flames falling into their mouths. Wounds fester and pus and feces, blood, and other impure things cannot be found. They gather together and seek mature pus from tumors in their throats. For these, in the summer, the moon is hot, and in the winter, even the sun is cold. These trees without fruit, just by looking at them, even the wind becomes dry. So it is said. The animals that live in the water are said to be only as much as the yeast of wine in the outer ocean. Crocodiles and huge fish, fish-eating fish, and those that devour them, have bodies as big as mountains, and the small ones are eaten by the big ones, and the big ones swallow the small ones whole. Although the nagas have great power and abundant enjoyment, they have the suffering of black and white nagas fighting, hail-like gravel scorching flesh and bones, being afflicted by various diseases, and being devoured by garudas. Scattered animals are those that can be seen by the eyes in the human realm. The lifespan is uncertain, as some die as soon as they are born, and some live for an eon at most. The Treasury says: Animals benefit each other.

Killing insects and lives, and killing without autonomy, etc., are always tormented by suffering, almost the same as hell. As it is said in the "Letter to a Friend": Even in the state of animals, there are various sufferings such as killing, imprisonment, and beating. For those who abandon the virtues of tranquility, it is extremely unbearable to devour each other. Some are killed for pearls, wool, bones, meat, and skin. Others are forced to be beaten helplessly with feet, hands, whips, and sharp iron hooks. So it is said. Humans also have the suffering of birth, old age, sickness, and death. The suffering of birth is: Even if you desire so much now, you must be confined to an impure pit for three days. If you were told to give three gold coins within three days, no one could do it, and the suffering of the womb is even more unbearable. Just as it is said in the letter to the student: The extremely unbearable filth blocks, the darkness of extreme fear envelops, entering the hell-like state of the womb, the body shrinks, and one must endure great suffering. So it is said. If one believes these, who can bear to enter the womb again? The suffering of old age is: In the "Holy Great Play Sutra," it is said: Old age makes the beautiful form ugly, old age steals glory, and strength declines. Old age steals happiness, and strength declines. Old age brings death, and old age also steals radiance. So it is said. The suffering of sickness is: In the "Holy Great Play Sutra," it is said: Hundreds of diseases arise, diseases entangle, and suffering torments beings, like hungry ghosts of humans. So it is said. The suffering of death is: In the "Sutra of Advice to the King," it is said: Great King, similarly, the sword of the Lord of Death pierces, there is no reliance, no protection, no help, no relatives. Tormented by disease, the mouth is dry, the face changes, the hands and feet wave, unable to stand. Saliva, mucus, urine, and vomit cover the body. A terrible sound is emitted. Doctors give up treatment. Lying on the final bed. Sinking in the torrent of samsara. Terrified by the fear of the Lord of Death. Breathing stops, and the nose opens. Abandoning this world.
