Where should one go alone? Whether friend or foe, all will die. Therefore, one should accumulate merit as quickly as possible. Even if one abandons laziness at that time, what use is it when the time has passed? This is like starting what has not been done, and abiding in what has been done. When sudden death comes, one will only sigh, "Alas." Thus it is said. This untrustworthy Lord of Death does not stay, whether something has been done or not. Whether sick or not, everyone will depart suddenly, and cannot be trusted. Since one must abandon everything and leave, I did not know that. For the sake of friends and foes, I committed various sins. Those who are not friends will also disappear, and those who are friends will also disappear. I will also disappear, and thus, everything will disappear. Thus it is said. Armanagardzuna said: This life is short, and there is much to know. The length of life is also unknown. Like a swan taking milk from water, one should take what pleases oneself. Thus it is said. For those with understanding, this is enough. For those with little understanding and who are easily attached, it is best to practice in a cemetery or a place with many ant nests. The body should be in a posture of sorrow, and the mind should contemplate in this way: I do not know where I came from, but I arrive in a valley. That valley faces north, its color is black, there is no traffic or speech, the water flows gurgling, the wind howls, the reeds make a rustling sound, the sun sets little by little on the mountaintop, the rocky mountains are blue, and the crows caw. In such a place, from who knows where, there is not a single friend or companion. I have never been there before. Not knowing where to go, I wander aimlessly, reciting: Alas, alas, how pitiful! Alas, alas, how pitiful! Alone and without friends, I wander in the empty valley. I do not know where to go. Where is my homeland? Where are my parents? Where are my children and possessions? When will I return to my homeland? Alas, alas, how miserable I am! Crying out loudly like this, not knowing where to go, I wander aimlessly, and at some point, I come to a rocky mountain...

From the fall, I waved my hands, and at some point, I grabbed a clump of grass in the middle of the rock. I held onto it tightly, trembling. Looking down, there was no bottom; looking up, it reached the sky. The rock was wide and flat like a mirror. The wind was howling. I was falling like that. From the right side of that clump of grass, from a crack in the rock, a white mouse appeared, bit off a blade of grass, and left. From the left side, from a crack in the rock, a black mouse appeared, bit off a blade of grass, and left. The two of them took turns, and the clump of grass became smaller and smaller. I couldn't find a way to attack the mice. I was terrified and afraid of death, trembling. I thought to myself: Alas, now death has come upon me, there is no place to escape. I had never thought of death before, so there was no Dharma. The place of death is terrible. During this time, I had not remembered death either. Now death comes suddenly. Today I must part with my children, wealth, land, relatives, friends, and neighbors. From now on, I will never see them again. The accumulated wealth will be left behind. Today I must go to a strange and distant place that I have never been to before. Alas, what method can free me from this fear? Is there any way? What should I do? Alas, I thought like this, and loudly uttered these sorrowful words: Alas, I am so afraid! Alas, death is coming! Now death is coming soon! I must go alone, without friends! I must go to a distant place! I must go to a strange place! I must cross a great mountain! How can I be freed from this? If there is any method, I will practice it. Alas, death is coming! Alas, I am so afraid! I lamented like this. At that moment, in the sky above me, on a lotus and moon, my root guru and Guru Rinpoche were inseparable, holding a damaru and bell, wearing the six bone ornaments, dancing, and said to me: Alas! Conditioned phenomena are impermanent and will quickly perish. The outer four seasons are impermanent, changing and passing away. Old age, race, enemies, friends, death, and decay
