I, young and vigorous, see the years, months, and days changing. This life passes quickly like a waterfall on a steep mountain, yet foolish beings do not realize they will die. Now impermanence and death are approaching, and there is no way to avoid death. Is there a way to avoid it? Look at this now! Now there is no time, cultivate devotion to the Lama. Having said this, as soon as I heard the sound, I thought: Alas, like this, before facing death, one should practice the Dharma! I truly regret not having practiced the Dharma before. Now, whether I live or die, Lama, the Three Jewels, know me! If the Lama, the Three Jewels, have compassion, why not deliver me from this great precipice? Father Lama, the Three Jewels, know me! Just by generating strong devotion from the depths of my heart, a single essence of light shone from the Lama's heart and pierced me, and at the same time as the pile of grass was exhausted, I was lifted and raised by that light. I arrived in the Pure Land of Sukhavati. And I thought that from my heart immeasurable light shone forth, guiding all sentient beings of the three realms, without exception, to Sukhavati. I must cultivate intense compassion for all sentient beings! There are also those who do not understand the meaning of what is said and cannot grasp the point of practice. Look at these things that can be seen with the eyes. These kapalas, leg bone trumpets, and skull rosaries are also supports for contemplating impermanence. Think, when will my head and feet also become like this? When the eyes see and the ears hear of someone dying, think, when will I also become like that? When a person dies and the corpse is taken to the cemetery, and seeing that they can no longer return home, think, alas, I will also become like this. When you see the corpse being eaten by birds and dogs, worms wriggling inside, and bones scattered everywhere, think, alas, when will my body also become like this? When people from your own region, village, acquaintances, and relatives die while still in the midst of farming and many unfinished tasks, know that you also want to accomplish many things, but there is no time. When you see people of your own age or even younger dying, know that even youth is no guarantee against death. That

These are not foolish talks of bad criticism either. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: "Having gone to the charnel ground, the bones of others and my own body, when will I equally realize that they are of the nature of decay?" Thus it is said. In the collection of specially expressed verses, it says: "The corpses of others abandoned in the charnel ground, stiff and scattered in various ways, bones like the color of ashes, having gone to the ten directions, like that, my own body is also the same." Thus it is said. The benefits of meditating on death and impermanence in this way are: In the sutra, the Bhagavan said: "If you meditate on impermanence a lot, it is like making offerings to all the Buddhas. If you meditate on impermanence a lot, all the Buddhas are pleased. If you meditate on impermanence a lot, all the Buddhas give prophecies. If you meditate on impermanence a lot, all the Buddhas give blessings. For example, among all the footprints, the footprint of an elephant is the best. Similarly, among all the concepts of meditation of Buddhist practitioners, only the concept of meditating on impermanence is the best." Thus it is said. In the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, it says: "Among all the fields that are plowed, the autumn harvest is the best. Among all the footprints, the footprint of a bull is the best. Among all the concepts, the concept of impermanence and death is the best. These eliminate the desires of the three realms, ignorance, and all pride." Thus it is said. Emaho! From the beginning of existence until now, not a single one has survived death. Although everyone knows about death, they still do not suspect it. This thought is a bad song of the devil. Having seen one's peers and those younger than oneself die, where is the confidence in one's own immortality? Having seen many children die, what is the use of being young? Having seen great kings with wealth and power also pass away, no matter how carefully rituals and medical treatments are performed, how can one prevent the death of time? Like the sun on the peak of the western mountain, which no one can postpone, a time of confrontation will come. When that day will come, there is no certainty. There is no way to avoid death, and even if one feels the pain of the end of life, there is not much freedom in where to go. Strive for greater freedom for your own body! At least do not regret it at the time of death, and have compassion for yourself.
