Dapa La. First, the characteristics of a Lama. In Shakya Od's "Three Hundred Verses": "Possessing discipline and knowing the rituals of taming, Having compassion for the sick, a pure retinue, Diligent in benefiting Dharma and material things, Taming at the right time, these are praised as Lamas." Also, in the "Twenty Verses": "The Lama abides in vows and is skilled, One should take refuge in one who is capable." Also, in the "Ornament of the Sutras": "The supreme teacher of Bodhisattvas is, Gentle, free from attachment, not weary, Clear, possessing various kinds of knowledge, Understanding, free from worldly concerns, completely liberated. Bodhisattvas are learned, Seeing the truth, skilled in speech, compassionate, The noble person without weariness, Should be known as a great being. Vast, abandoning doubt, Worthy to be held, teaching those two, This is the Bodhisattva's, Perfect teacher, so it is said." A spiritual friend who is peaceful, tamed, and very peaceful, Possessing superior qualities, diligent, and rich in scriptures, Skilled in speaking, fully realizing that very nature, Rely on one who possesses love and abandons weariness. Also, Nagarjuna said: "Having heard much and having great wisdom, Not seeking wealth and gain, Possessing Bodhicitta, great compassion, Able to endure hardship and having little weariness. Having great instructions and liberated from the path, Skilled in touching and knowing the temperature, One should rely on one who possesses twelve qualities." Also, Atisha's "Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment" says: "Skilled in the rituals of vows, Whatever Lama abides in vows, Able to bestow vows, possessing compassion, One should know him as a good Lama." Thus it is said. Thus, although I do not possess those characteristics of a Lama, In this degenerate age, Lamas who are without faults and possess qualities are rare. One can rely on a Lama who has a mixture of faults and qualities, but whose qualities are slightly more dominant. In the "True Intimacy": "In the degenerate age, due to its influence, The faults and qualities of Lamas are mixed, There is no one who is completely without sin in every way. Whichever has more superior qualities, Should also be carefully examined, The disciples should rely on him." Thus it is said. The tradition of the Kagyupas is, Je Gampopa said: If the Lama does not have realization, Even if the disciple has devotion, it is of no benefit. For example, if there is no design on a carved bowl, Even if it is well polished, it will not shine. If the disciple does not have faith and respect, Then even if the Lama has realization, it is of no benefit. For example, if milk is poured into

Even if you say it's like a child without taste buds, according to the general principles of Buddhism, even if one doesn't have good experiences and realizations, if believers listen, realization will arise. In Nepal in the past, there was a very intelligent person skilled in writing who killed both of his parents and then wandered around. In an empty temple, there was an Arhat residing. He secretly killed the Arhat, wore the Arhat's robes, and pretended to be the Arhat he had killed. Everyone thought he was the Arhat and listened to his teachings with devotion. He read and explained the scriptures, gathering hundreds of thousands of followers. Those with good karma attained the Arhatship, and many with clairvoyance and miraculous powers appeared. The Arhat disciples, using their clairvoyance, saw that their guru was a great sinner. They tried to guide him, but were unsuccessful, and he eventually fell into hell. This story is widely told in Buddhist histories and is known as the "Story of the Great Heavenly Monk." Sakya Pandita quoted this story, saying, "Even if there are many disciples, it is not guaranteed that they are all good." Even if the lineage is impure, there is no problem, just as cleaning a ditch with rags still allows the water to benefit the fields. Drogön Chöpak received initiation from a shepherd. The accomplished Thangtong Gyalpo received the Hevajra initiation from a sinful monk, the Vajravarahi initiation from a fallen nun, and the recitation and practice of the Manjushri-namasamgiti from the widow of a deceased Acharya. The reason they received these initiations was to maintain the lineage of those places. Considering this, the Kadampa lamas said, "Do not negate the Dharma because of the faults of a person." Even if the listener has no faith or does not understand the meaning of the Dharma, there is benefit in merely hearing the sound of the Dharma. In the past, when Bhikshu Upagupta was teaching the Dharma, a female dog heard the sound, lessened her obscurations, and immediately after death, was reborn as a deity in the Paranirmitavasavartin heaven. In India, the sound of a Bhikshu reciting the Sangitisutra was heard by a parrot, lessening its obscurations, and after death, it obtained a human body and became a monk. He was able to remember all the Sangitisutra he had heard before. Furthermore, when a Bhikshu was teaching the Dharma in Nepal, a frog heard the sound, lessening its obscurations, and after death, was reborn.
