That Ugyen (Padmasambhava) of meditation! The root lineage lama is the total collection of visualization. Prayers to the three bodies of the Lama, etc., Recite any prayer you know, Or recite the Vajra Guru (བཛྲ་གུ་རུ་,vajra guru,Vajra Master). Then the blessings of the four empowerments are, Padmasambhava dissolves into light like pouring water, Meditate on merging into yourself without separation. That is the preliminary visualization part, Brief and complete, the main practice is not to meditate on anything in the mind. Calm abiding and insight are two, In the space in front, the Bhagavan, Shakyamuni is clearly visualized. Focus single-pointedly on that body, Without the mind wandering elsewhere, See how long the awareness can abide. If it does not abide and wanders, then draw it back, As before, the mind is on the teacher, Abide as long as it can abide. Being able to prevent the mind from wandering elsewhere, For a long time, the mind abides, It is the practice of common calm abiding. The practice of uncommon calm abiding is, Without meditating on anything in the mind, Looking at the mind with the mind, Without the mind wandering elsewhere, In that state of peaceful abiding, Abide as long as it can abide, without scattering gross thoughts. The mind abides in peace, That state of abiding is also known by the mind. Now my mind is, Thinking that there is peaceful abiding, There is a definite understanding of clinging to the mind. That is signless calm abiding. Do some practice on this for a while. Then there are also two types of insight, First, common insight is, The root of all phenomena is one's own mind, When the root of the mind is cut off, The root of all phenomena is cut off. Therefore, search well for your own mind, Inside, outside, and in between the body, and, Outside, above, below, and in the directions, Search for where your own mind is. What is the color of that mind like? What is the shape of that mind like? Form, sound, smell, taste, touch, etc., What is the appearance of that mind like? If you have not found your own mind, Who is the one who thinks that it has not been found? Who is the one who is searching for the mind? If the mind exists, How do objects and images appear? If the mind does not exist, Where do happiness and suffering come from? Where do the five poisons and anger come from? Where does faith and pure appearance come from? Where does the person who wants to study the Dharma come from? Like that, like a rosary in the mind, The thoughts that are remembered even when you don't want to remember them, Where did it come from in the beginning? Where does it abide now? Where will it go in the end? Now

Please search well! If you don't find it then, to the very one who thinks they haven't found it, look and abide, and what will happen? At that time, think well! Then, especially for vipassanā (superior seeing), sometimes without thinking anything, let the mind relax there! Do not remember anything in your mind, let it abide as long as it can. Without the mind going anywhere, abide as much as you can. Sometimes let it go anywhere! Let it go to wherever it exists. Like this, alternate between tightening and relaxing. When you reach that essence, the color, shape, and abiding of the mind, please tell me. Do not be distracted, such as by speaking softly, etc., be sure to determine what is in your mind. Be sure to tell me. This is the first meditation instruction. Then, for the uncommon śamatha (calm abiding) and vipassanā, without remembering anything in the mind, the stillness that abides, that awareness is called śamatha. Looking at the essence of that abider, there is nothing, seeing emptiness is vipassanā. Abiding and emptiness, the two, without difference, the essence is one, is called śamatha-vipassanā union. Abiding there for a long time is abiding giving rise to attachment. If you do not abide and are distracted, do not tighten, abide in a relaxed state and watch. There is no need to say much, straighten your body and watch with one-pointedness. If you search for your own mind and do not find it, that is called emptiness. It has no shape, no color, it is not outside or inside the body, searching in the ten directions outside, it is not there. That mind is not non-existent either, happiness, suffering, the five poisons, faith, reverence, etc., remembering all kinds of things, everything appears. Because it is neither existent nor non-existent, the true nature of the mind cannot be spoken. Therefore, it is unspeakable, unthinkable, inexpressible. Your own mind is originally mahāmudrā (great seal), knowing your own face is enough. If you want good and fear bad, you will be bound. Without expectation or fear, whatever appears, do not modify it, relax and abide. The mind looking back at the mind, that is what is called meditation. If you do not recognize your own mind, because you do not recognize meditation, there is nothing to be seen by looking. Seeing that there is nothing to be seen, that is recognizing the nature of the mind. What is called mahāmudrā, that refers to your own mind. Be certain that it is not in other places, practice on that.
