Instructions on the Fruits of Practice Namo Guru Dharmeshvaraye. I supplicate the kind and venerable Lama, Please hold me with your compassion. If all the teachings are summarized, They are the four: view, meditation, conduct, and result. Although there are many ways to explain the view, This view of mind looking at mind, Is the view of Milarepa. The views of Mahamudra and Dzogchen are included in this. The view of verbose words, Although needed by those who give teachings, Is of little use to those who practice. Like counting the horses and sheep of a wealthy nomad, A beggar counts them, but they are not his. If you do not realize this view, Explaining the view is of little use. Although there are many kinds of meditation, This unforgetting sentinel of mindfulness, Is the meditation of Milarepa. Uncontrived abiding is the pith instruction, Transforming whatever arises is the advice, Without acceptance or rejection is the key point. These many stages of mind-holding, Although needed by those who give instructions, Are of little use to those who practice. Many stages of focus are conceptual thoughts, Conceptual thought is the delusion of ignorance, Like being entangled in silk threads. Although it is not a boundary of conduct, Conduct arises spontaneously in an unforgetting state. This is the conduct of Milarepa. Guarding the mind is the best of all vows, Taming one's own mind is taming. These many boundaries of permission and prohibition, Although needed by monks, Are of little use to those who practice. If you pour water on a stove fire, The flames, heat, and smoke will all be extinguished. Likewise, when guarding one's own mind, All faults and downfalls will naturally cease. Although there are many ways to explain how to attain the result, When one attains self-mastery of one's own mind, The Kagyu tradition considers it to be the result. These views on the stages of the path and the result, Although needed by those who debate, Are of little use to those who practice. Once Mahamudra is decided, To count the stages of the path is a confused delusion. So said Kyeme Zhang. The song of view, meditation, conduct, and result, Was spoken when experience arose immediately. Although it is embarrassing for scholars, It will suit the minds of some practitioners. Although it does not agree with the scriptures that are taught, It agrees with the meaning of the whispered lineage of pith instructions. This is the advice given to meditators in the song of Araga. The instruction on how to cultivate love for one's kind father: Namo Maha Karunikaye. By thinking of whom, one attains supreme enlightenment,

The single path for the progress of all beings, I constantly prostrate to the Bodhicitta. The supreme ones who transform kindness into reality, I respectfully bow to the sons of the Buddhas, the Bodhisattvas. In this world with gods, parents are known as the great and kind protectors. They endure hardships to nurture our bodies and sustain us. They worry about sickness, death, hunger, and suffering. They even sacrifice their lives to raise their children. If they see us sick or harmed by evil spirits, they suffer as if their hearts and lungs are torn apart. They spend the wealth they have accumulated through thrift on treatments. If we can speak a little or recover a bit, they rejoice as if they have gained great happiness. They suck out our snot and pus, and carry our urine and feces in their hands. Even if they find delicious food, they cannot bear to eat it themselves. They say, "Take it, my son," and put it in their sleeves or on their backs. They give us the best and most beautiful clothes, while they themselves are content with ragged clothes. Whatever good wealth or possessions they have, they say, "My son needs this," and cannot bear to use it themselves. Whatever fields, houses, or wealth they have, they give it all to their children without any sense of loss. In this way, we are well cared for by the kindness of our parents. However, our parents are also seized by the diseases of old age. The radiance of their faces fades, like flowers struck by frost. White hairs grow on their heads, as if sharp iron hooks have been planted. Their bodies are bound by many wrinkles, like ropes. They have difficulty breathing, cough constantly, and their ears become deaf. Their eyes become blurred, and they see things distortedly. Their legs become weak, they stagger, and often fall. Their backs become hunched, and their skin sags. Their speech becomes unclear, their senses become dull. If they eat, they cannot digest; if they don't eat, they feel hungry. Even though they show signs of being seized by the Lord of Death, Yama, they still say, "I don't have time to die," and make preparations for their death in advance. Seeing the suffering of old age manifest, what is more worthy of compassion than this? Even if we see such a vast ocean of suffering, if we do not cultivate a mind of compassion and loving-kindness, but instead use harsh words and even bully them, this is not the behavior of a practitioner, let alone anything else. This will be ridiculed by the world. The Buddha said in the sutra on repaying the kindness of parents that parents are the objects of offering and the fields of merit for all beings in the world. By relying on them, all the happiness of higher realms and definite goodness will arise. Similarly, the Buddha in the Parent Sutra
