The ground is ten. What are the ten? If analyzed, it is because of the nature of faith, diligence, mindfulness, wisdom, concentration, equanimity, joy, investigation, ethics, and pliancy. (Eight wisdoms, four right abandonments, two powers of diligence, the limb of perfect enlightenment of diligence, right effort and eight diligences. Two powers of mindfulness, the limb of perfect enlightenment of mindfulness, right mindfulness and four mindfulnesses. Two powers of concentration, four miraculous legs, the limb of perfect enlightenment of concentration, right concentration and eight concentrations. Two powers of faith, faith being the five objects, right speech, the three livelihoods of the edge of karma are ethics, being one object, equanimity, joy, investigation, and pliancy, each being one object, generally accepted as ten objects.) How so? (Right view, the Dharma, the power of wisdom that makes all things well, is four) The four mindfulnesses (that is, eight) are because they are the nature of wisdom, and diligence is also rightly established and called the four abandonments, and the four miraculous legs are because they are the nature of concentration, and among the seven limbs of enlightenment, the discriminating Dharma is the limb of perfect enlightenment, and among the eight noble paths, the two right views are wisdom, and the two right efforts and the limb of perfect enlightenment of diligence are diligence, and the three right speech, karma, and livelihood are because they are the nature of ethics, and one object, the five faculties and the five powers, and among the limbs of enlightenment, joy and pliancy and the three limbs of perfect enlightenment of equanimity, and among the eight noble paths, right investigation, these nine are shown by their respective names. According to the Vaibhashikas, the limbs of ethics, the actions of body and speech, are eleven objects because their entities are different and their kinds are not the same. Others desire the mind of abandoning ethics, and because it is one, it is accepted as one object. Some say, the determination gathers

Furthermore, if asked: Do the five faculties such as faith and the thirty-seven dharmas that are in accordance with the aspects of enlightenment mutually include each other? The thirty-seven include the five faculties, but the five faculties do not include the thirty-seven. Which ones are not included? Right speech, the limit of action, right livelihood, joy, pliancy, and equanimity—these six are not included. Therefore, some say that the noble teacher considers right thought to be included within wisdom, and because the actions of body and speech in discipline are different, they are considered to be ten entities. Thus, mindfulness is wisdom, right effort is diligence, and the basis of miraculous power is samadhi. These are said to be the main points, but if these also include their retinue, then apart from the innate qualities such as faith, the qualities arising from practice, such as the contaminated and uncontaminated qualities arising from hearing, thinking, and meditation, as well as joy, pliancy, equanimity, right thought, faith, mindfulness, discipline, and so on, are all mindfulness and so on. (Even if their characteristics, attainment, and the aspects of equipoise are different, they are included there because they are of the same category. When speaking of arising from practice, innate faith and so on are not included there.) Among these, the four mindfulnesses have already been explained. Since right abandonment and so on have not been explained, they will be explained here. That is, in order to abandon evil, unwholesome dharmas that have arisen, one generates desire, strives, initiates diligence, completely holds the mind, and applies right attention. Similarly, in order to prevent unarisen evil, unwholesome dharmas from arising, in order to generate unarisen wholesome dharmas, in order to maintain arisen dharmas, not to forget them, to perfect their cultivation, and to increase, habituate, expand, and make them vast, in order to realize wisdom, one generates desire, strives, initiates diligence, completely holds the mind, and applies right attention. This is what is said in the sutra. Among these, desire is aspiration, striving is application, diligence is the main action, and completely holding the mind and applying right attention are the aftermath. Evil
