So, why doesn't it directly spill over? Some say that due to the force of karma of sentient beings, it doesn't spill, just as undigested food doesn't fall into the cecum. The noble Asanga, however, considers that because the wind resides in the lungs and in the lower region, it doesn't spill over because it relies on the wind. In explaining the reliance, the explanation of the mountain is: After that (by the power of karma), seeds (or elements) in the sky gather clouds with various essences, and from the rain falling for many years, a great ocean is formed. Its size is determined to be about eighty thousand yojanas. There, the wind that completely gathers and separates the elements bends it into the shape of a boat, and thus Mount Meru is formed on the golden ground. Because it is very majestic, it is called Mount Meru, and because it is the king of mountains, it is called the King of Mountains. (Similarly, the other mountains and continents are gradually formed by winds similar to their respective shapes.) Furthermore, the wind that gathers and separates the intermediate elements stirs around that mountain in a square shape, thus forming the mountains Yoke-Holder, Plow-Shaft-Holder, Good-Looking, as well as the Beautiful Mountain, Horse-Ear, Submissive, and Ring-Holder outside of Mount Meru. The peaks of those mountains either hold the yoke of the sun's chariot, or are in the shape of a yoke, or in the shape of a plow-shaft, or are like Good-Looking (because there are golden Good-Looking trees?), or are pleasing, or are like the ears of a rock horse, or are submissive towards the center, or because they surround the edge of everything, they are called that in sequence. (They are nine mountains, but from the basis of the earth, the order of the middle five mountains, Submissive, Horse-Ear Mountain, Beautiful Mountain, Good-Looking, and Plow-Shaft-Holder, is another explanation. The names of those mountains should be observed from the differences in the shapes of their peaks.) Then, in the east, south, west, and north directions, the wind that gathers and separates the lower elements stirs violently, thus forming Jambudvipa and so on. Since they surround all of these from all directions, outside of those continents is the surrounding Iron Mountain. (Its outer edge

(It has three million six hundred and twenty-six thousand two hundred and twenty-five units of measurement around.) It surrounds the four continents. All four continents are formed simultaneously in the same way. Among these mountains, the seven mountains, including Yoke-holder Mountain, are of the nature of gold, and the surrounding area is of the nature of iron. (The Abhidharmakosha states: the east is crystal, the west is silver.) Mount Meru is of the nature of four jewels: silver in the east, lapis lazuli in the south, red crystal in the west, and gold in the north. Whichever jewel is the nature of the surface of Mount Meru, its light makes the sky on that surface appear in that color. Its light also makes the ocean on the surface appear in that color. Therefore, the surface of Jambudvipa is lapis lazuli, so its light makes the sky and ocean here appear in the color of lapis lazuli. The height of all nine mountains is said to be submerged in the water by eighty thousand yojanas, because everything rests on a golden foundation. Mount Meru also rises eighty thousand yojanas above the water. Most sutras say that Mount Meru is one hundred and sixty-eight thousand yojanas high, and the ocean is eighty-four thousand yojanas deep. Here, according to the Vinaya-vastu of the Mulasarvastivadins, the king of mountains, Mount Meru, touches the golden foundation at eighty thousand yojanas below. Eighty thousand yojanas appear above the water, so there are a total of one hundred and sixty thousand yojanas. It is said in accordance with this. The height of the remaining eight mountains is to be halved from the height of Mount Meru, Yoke-holder Mountain is half of Mount Meru, and so on, to be reduced by half and half. In this way, Yoke-holder Mountain is forty thousand yojanas, until the surrounding mountain is three hundred and thirteen and a half yojanas. Therefore, it should be known that the sum of the heights of the eight mountains above the waterline is less than the height of Mount Meru above the waterline by three hundred and thirteen and a half yojanas. The height of all these mountains, that is, the width, is equal to their respective heights. These are also in terms of the height above the waterline. Therefore, Mount Meru is eighty thousand yojanas, Yoke-holder Mountain is forty thousand yojanas, and so on. (From the bad realms, the Mount Meru's)
