It is unreasonable to say that the cause of arising together is the same, because present things have no before and after. If there is before and after, then it will become not the present thing, this fault must be avoided. From the established sect, rice is the same division as rice, barley is barley, etc., man is the same division as man, eyes are the same division as eyes, etc., it is only said to be its own kind, desire is the same division as desire, etc., it is only said to be its own ground. So, is the cause of the same division necessarily its own ground and its own kind? If it is defiled, then it is certain, if it is undefiled, then the near attainment of the first dhyana, and the special, and the four dhyanas, (and the six dhyana grounds,) and the first three formless dhyanas, that is, the truth of the path of the nine grounds, even if the grounds are not the same, they are also the cause of the same division to each other, because those paths are suddenly produced in those grounds, so they are not possessed by the greed of those grounds, therefore they are not included in the realm. Moreover, the path of the lower ground is also the ground of the upper ground, and the upper ground is also the ground of the lower ground, so it is said to each other. If it is everything, then it is (also oneself and,) the same and (above oneself,) the superior, but not the inferior. Moreover, the forbearance of knowing the Dharma of suffering is the same, it is one's own later kind, the superior is the Dharma-knowing of suffering, etc., and the truth of the path of cultivation and the path of no more learning is the superior cause, similarly, the faith-follower is oneself, and the Dharma-follower, and the faith-understanding, and the attainment of sight, and the liberation by time, and the six kinds of liberation not by time. Moreover, the faith-follower of the fourth dhyana ground, and the faith-follower of the ground below the third dhyana are also the same, because both are dull in faculties. Therefore, the Dharma-follower of the first dhyana ground is superior, therefore, the (undefiled) path of the upper ground acts as the cause of the same division of the (undefiled) path of the lower ground, just like the dull-witted ones of the fourth dhyana ground, after training their faculties, give rise to the path of the Dharma-follower of the sharp-witted ones below the third dhyana. Similarly, faith-understanding etc. should also be inferred.

It is said that the son of King, the teacher, is a follower of faith and meditation, so he has transference of consciousness; while the follower of faith is a path of seeing, so he does not. The teacher Vasubandhu thinks that it exists. Not only is it uncontaminated, but all contaminated virtues arising from effort are also the common result of both equality and specialty. What is that? Hearing-born is oneself, and the three of thought-born and meditation-born, which are included by the word "thought-born, etc." Thought-born is oneself and meditation-born, these two. Meditation-born is only itself. (For the four undeclared and the four desire realm emanations, up to one, apply in the same way. This implies the common result between innate virtues and afflictions, for example, the common result affliction of small innate virtues is like the time of cutting off the root of virtue or abandoning it with counterforce.) Fourth, the co-existent cause is the cause of co-existence, which is mind and mental factors, and those with the same basis such as the eye. Therefore, the object, aspect, time, and substance are also included. (Therefore, mind and mental factors are mutually cause and effect, and because the five co-existences exist equally, it is called the co-existent cause.) Moreover, the co-arising cause is general, and the co-existent cause is specific. Fifth, the pervasive cause is the cause called pervasive, which is the five views of the suffering truth to be abandoned by seeing, doubt, and ignorance, a total of seven; and the view of self, extreme view, wrong view, doubt, and ignorance of the origin truth to be abandoned by seeing, a total of four, totaling eleven (and in the upper two realms it is also the same, each having eleven, so thirty-three subtle qualities are obtained, in addition to which, those related to co-existence and characteristics, which will be explained in the fifth chapter, are the pervasive cause. The thirty-three pervasive subtle qualities of the first two truths of the three realms, which will be explained in the fifth chapter, in addition to which, those related to co-existence and characteristics). Because they are the non-common cause that precedes the afflicted ones (of the same continuum). Is it always so? It refers to belonging to one's own ground.
