Thus it is. Secondly, the reasoning is that if attainment is not substantially existent, then when the noble ones directly realize the worldly path, there would be no difference between ordinary beings and those who have abandoned and realized, because there is no direct realization of the past path, and the attainment of the past path is not substantially established, so it is the same as ordinary beings. Moreover, even among the noble ones such as Stream-enterers, Once-returners, and Non-returners, there would be no difference in abandonment and realization, because the dharma that makes abandonment and realization high or low—attainment—is not substantially existent. Therefore, those attainments are made by attainment and are substantially existent. The teacher says that even if attainment is not substantially existent, there is a difference between the noble ones and ordinary beings in abandonment and realization, because there is whether or not the seeds of what is to be abandoned by seeing have been abandoned. Even among the noble ones, there is a difference in abandoning more to be abandoned and attaining more uncontaminated faculties. Thus it is said. Secondly,) there are two types: newly acquired and (from the second moment onwards) continuously existing. Newly acquired also has two types: newly acquired from what was previously (never) attained, such as the first moment of the uncontaminated (attainment), and (previously attained) acquired (later newly) from what has been completely lost, such as meditative absorption and the formless realms. (The attainment acquired from loss, i.e., two types of attainment) and continuously existing (i.e., the attainment of existence), which are the two continuous existences of those, and the afflictions of the peak of existence that each individual possesses from the beginning (because they have not generated the antidote to the top, therefore the attainment of those afflictions), in short, there are five types, as explained by the Vaibhashikas. If attainment and non-attainment exist for all dharmas, then attainment and non-attainment only occur for dharmas that belong to one's own continuum, not for those that belong to other continua or do not belong to the continuum of sentient beings, because it is contradictory for others to attain other's dharmas (then ordinary beings would have noble ones), and because what does not belong to the continuum (clothes and ropes, etc.) has no attainment (and is common), because attainment is attained by a person (so it is not common). (This is the determination of conditioned phenomena.) Thus, in general, even if it does not belong to the continuum, the attainment of the two, through individual examination and negation of that, arises in the continuum of the person. Thus it is indicated.
