It is. Like this, there are two kinds of sound: those that arise from the cause of the great elements that are (not involved in different faculties), and those that arise from the cause of the great elements that are not involved. Each of these sounds has two types: those that indicate sentient beings and express meaning, and (the opposite of that) those that do not indicate sentient beings and do not express meaning, making four types in total. Each of these also has two types (due to being pleasant or unpleasant to the ear): agreeable and disagreeable, so there are eight types in this way. Among these, the sound that indicates sentient beings and arises from the cause of the unapprehended elements is like the verses that come from the drums of the gods of the Thirty-Three. The others are easy to understand. The noble Asanga said that the sound of a drum is like that which arises from the cause of both apprehended and unapprehended great elements, but the Vaibhashikas do not accept this, because they do not accept that a single form of result relies on two sets of four great elements. However, they accept that the sound that arises from both the drum and the hand, these are merely conditions, and the basis is the unapprehended great element. Taste is the object of the tongue faculty, and it is of six kinds: sweet, sour, salty, hot, bitter, and astringent. Smell is the object of the nose faculty, and it is divided into two kinds: fragrant and foul. Each of these is divided into two kinds: mixed and unmixed, so there are four kinds in total. Among these, mixed is considered to be when the two components of fragrant and foul are less, and unmixed is when the components are more. In the scriptures, there are three kinds: fragrant, foul, and mixed. Some consider mixed to be the third kind, while others say that mixed is one of the two previous kinds, so there is no difference in meaning. The object of the body faculty is touch, and it has eleven natures (if distinguished, there are the four elements that are the cause of touch, and the seven that are the result of touch: smoothness, roughness, heaviness, lightness, coldness, hunger, and thirst). What are the eleven? The touch that is the cause, such as the four elements of solidity, etc.; the touch that is the result, such as smoothness, roughness, heaviness, lightness, coldness, hunger, and thirst. Among these, cold is generally composed of (the four great elements, but especially)

The tactile sensation arising predominantly from water and wind elements causes a desire for warmth. Hunger, occurring within the stomach, is a tactile sensation arising predominantly from the wind element, causing a desire for food. Thirst is a tactile sensation arising predominantly from the fire element, causing a desire for drink. The reason these are referred to as wanting food and wanting drink is because the effect is named after the cause. The rest is easy to understand. If (that is the case), when there is tactile sensation within the body, then the body's sense faculty would also become an object of touch, since it is the domain of the body's sense faculty. If one asks this, the sense faculty is not something to be touched (but rather the toucher). The appearance of tactile sensation within the body is because the sense faculty touches the tactile sensation of the cause and the tactile sensation of the effect existing in the body's aggregate, and thus it is perceived in that way. Regarding that (second, regarding the four distinctions of phenomena, namely in which realm and ground those objects and faculties exist), all five types of body exist in the desire realm. In the form realm, there are no smells, tastes, or hunger and thirst, because there is no attachment to food in that realm. (Since the body and its support are as clear as light, and it is also said in designation that clothes cannot be measured by weight, then how can there be weight? Answer: There is. Although each piece of clothing is not measured, the stack can be measured. If it is said that cold is dust, then how can it exist?) The tactile sensation of cold exists. The Vaibhashikas assert that although there is no harmful tactile sensation, there is beneficial tactile sensation. The master's own system is that only samadhi is beneficial there, so what is the use of examining cold there? (If only samadhi is beneficial, then wouldn't the three kinds of pleasure of the first dhyana's consciousness aggregate not be beneficial? Therefore, no tactile sensation other than extremely pliant tactile sensation is beneficial.) The five sense faculties exist in the lower two realms, but in the formless realm, they do not exist, because they have abandoned attachment to form. (Second,) the way in which objects generate consciousness is that sometimes many objects generate one consciousness, such as brocade, where multiple objects of color and shape generate one consciousness that apprehends it. Sometimes one object also generates many consciousnesses.
