Explanation of the Five Meanings. Explanation of the Five Meanings. Secondly, the explanation of the five meanings. (Of the two, the first is:) The form that becomes the object of the eye, if summarized, is of two kinds: color and shape. If divided in detail, the scriptures say there are twenty kinds. Among them, colors have four root colors: blue, yellow, red, and white. These are clouds, smoke, dust, mist, shadow, sun, light, and darkness, which are eight branch colors, totaling twelve. There are also eight shapes: long, short, square, round, high, low, flat, and non-flat. Among them, dust is dust particles. Mist is the south wind. Shadow is where objects appear. In the Commentary on Reasoning, it is also said that whatever obstructs the sun and objects in between makes the objects appear clearly. Darkness is the opposite of this. The sun is the light of the sun. Light is the light of jewels (moon, stars, and fire), etc. Square is quadrilateral. Round is circular. A shape that is the same or has a wide surface is flat, and one that is not the same or has a narrow surface is non-flat. Others are easy to understand. Then, are there not also green, black, purple, and yellowish-brown colors? Green is mostly blue mixed with yellow, black is mostly blue mixed with red, purple is mostly yellow mixed with red, yellowish-brown is mostly yellow mixed with white, and bluish-gray is blue mixed with white, and so on. Some say that the sky appearing blue from a distance, resembling a wall of lapis lazuli, is one color, and adding it to the previous twenty, there are twenty-one. On top of these, the Compendium of Topics says that fine particles and coarse particles are two shapes, and manifest and distinguishable are two colors of form, adding these four, making twenty-five in total. If clouds and smoke, etc., are explained as classifications of form, then what is said here is too little, because water, fire, pillars, and vases, etc., are infinite. These are all blue.

Colors such as blue, yellow, red, and white, and shapes such as long, etc. (blue, yellow, red, and white. Light and dark, clouds and smoke. Dust and earwax, sun and. Shadow, long, short, flat, and. Round, high, low, and. Flat and not flat. The first twelve are colors. Four are the root colors. The eight are its divisions. The form of shape is eight kinds.) If they are not distinguished, then clouds, etc., should not be mentioned, because they are also included in those colors and shapes. If someone asks that. Although it is so, clouds, smoke, dust, and earwax are not considered substances by worldly people, and the four, shadow, etc., are to dispel the wrong idea that they are not separate from the ground, etc. The Sutra says: These are said to be divisions of form, but others are not mentioned because they are not necessary. The Vaibhashikas (What is the source of form?) are those that exist in color but not in shape, such as the four root colors of blue, etc., and shadow, sun, and light and darkness, totaling eight. Those that exist in shape but not in color are (caused by the mind that aims at one aspect of the eight shapes.) transformed into the nature of bodily expression (bodily action.) the eight of long, etc. Those that exist in both are (shapes other than those and.) the four of clouds, etc. are (the other first is only light and darkness, blue, etc. appear as long, etc., so those are also considered the third. Since one classification basis is used for calculation, there is no fourth. That is also the idea of the Vaibhashikas, holding appearances, etc. does not depend on shape, holding bodily expressions does not depend on color, and holding the remainder depends on both, that is what they think.) No, although it is said so, the Sutra masters believe that long, etc. are established from the different arrangements of color particles (inferred by the mind.), because shape is not a substance, there is no unique shape that is not a color (the eye holds without grasping color or touch.). It is reasonable to say so. Form has been explained. Sound is the object of the ear sense, it is eight kinds.
