From this basis you have now, experiencing torment by afflictions and being extremely saddened, until the beginningless beginning of samsara. Moreover, repeatedly praising how beings who were once mothers will experience the suffering of samsara. As it is said, "The bottomless samsara!" For those who do not see and cannot see the depths of samsara, even if they obtain a basis of good rebirth, if they do not obtain the ultimate life of the path, merely obtaining a basis of gods and humans of higher realms will not advance them in any stage of the path. As it is said in the Root Wisdom, "Because of the obscuration of ignorance, there is rebirth again." etc. If one does not cut off or abandon the ignorance of grasping at truth, which grasps at things as being truly existent, which is the root of samsara, then under the influence of that ignorance, one will accumulate karma and still wander in samsara, experiencing unimaginable suffering. For these beings, one must generate unbearable compassion, and having generated compassion, there is no other sentient being who has the means and power to liberate them from this suffering except for the complete Buddha. Although the causes for attaining that Buddha, such as the definite number and order of the ten grounds and five paths, have been extensively explained many times in the Characteristic Vehicle, attaining the state of Buddhahood by traversing the path of the Characteristic Vehicle requires a very long time for those of dull faculties who enter the accumulation path, either thirty-three countless eons, or seven countless eons for those of medium faculties, or a shorter time of three countless eons for those of sharp faculties, to definitely accumulate the two accumulations. Secondly, regarding the meaning of the word "samsara" that appears here, although it is necessary to know the distinctions of where one revolves, by what one revolves, who revolves, and how one revolves, I have already explained these in detail in the "Entering the Cycle of Existence." Here, to illustrate briefly, the nature of samsara is a distinction of being bound and connected by the power of karma and afflictions. Who revolves? Merely an "I" that is imputed in dependence on the consciousness of the mind or the aggregates. How does one revolve? Like a wheel of fire, or in a manner consistent with the sequence of a water bucket, passing through many births in the six realms. By what cause does one revolve?

That is due to the power of karma and afflictions. And that is mainly due to the power of ignorance. As stated in the Compendium Sutra: "Those who possess a mind attached to samsara constantly wander. The self and what belongs to the self are truly empty. Children themselves cast knots in the sky." And so on, "Likewise, children accept the self and what belongs to the self. In that self, non-true thoughts arise and perish. As they grasp, so they show all afflictions. Not perceiving the self and what belongs to the self, it is said to be purified." As it is said. Placing ignorance as the root of samsara is the common consensus of all our own schools. However, the ways of recognizing ignorance are different. For example, the Vaibhashika school of our own tradition believes that ignorance that is ignorant of karma and its results, and ignorance that clings to a self that is permanent, singular, and independent, are the roots of samsara. The Sautrantika school believes that ignorance that is ignorant of karma and its results, the four truths, etc., and ignorance that clings to a person as an independently existing substance, are the roots of samsara. The Chittamatra and Svatantrika schools are similar to this. However, both of them believe that the ignorance that is the root of samsara and the initial ignorance of the twelve links is ignorance that is ignorant of the selflessness of suchness. The Prasangika school, as stated in the Madhyamakavatara: "Initially, clinging to 'I' as a self, and generating attachment to things as 'this is mine,' like a revolving well-bucket, one is without independence." As it is said, they believe that the view of the aggregates clinging to 'I' and 'mine' is the root of samsara. In the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness, it says: "Whatever truly conceives of things born from causes and conditions, that is what the Teacher called ignorance, from which the twelve branches arise." Thus, it is said that ignorance is the root of samsara, and the thoughts that cling to things as inherently existent are also explained as ignorance. Although ignorance is accepted in the streams of the noble ones, it must be understood that the ignorance that is the root of samsara exists in the streams of ordinary beings, but not in the noble ones. Regarding the way to abandon that ignorance, it is also said in that same text: "Because of seeing reality, knowing well that things are empty, ignorance does not arise. That is the cessation of ignorance, therefore the twelve branches cease." And also in the Root Wisdom: "If ignorance ceases, then all actions
