And thus it is accomplished. The method of not being attached to the enjoyment already obtained, the method of preventing the distraction of desiring to obtain what has not been obtained, the method of not abandoning sentient beings, the method of increasing virtue, the method of purifying the two obscurations, are all accomplished through the six perfections. The order is also definite, because the latter arises depending on the former. Superiority and inferiority are also established, because the former is inferior and the latter is superior. Coarseness and subtlety are also established, because the former is coarse and the latter is subtle. As it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: "The latter arises depending on the former, because it is situated in inferiority and superiority, because it is coarse and subtle, therefore these are taught in order." Therefore. The six perfections of a Bodhisattva possess four qualities, namely, they cause their respective opposing factors, such as stinginess and immoral conduct, to decline, they are embraced by the wisdom that realizes emptiness, they fulfill the desired meaning of the occasion, and they possess the characteristic of maturing and liberating sentient beings. It says in that very text: "Giving causes opposing factors to decline, it possesses non-discriminating wisdom," and so on. These also subdue seven opposing factors with their power. For example, in the case of giving, one is not attached due to stinginess. Similarly, one is not attached due to enjoyment, one is not attached due to procrastination, one is not attached due to contentment, one is not attached due to expecting a return, one is not attached due to expecting a result, one is not attached due to distraction. It says in that very text: "The giving of a Bodhisattva is unattached, unsoiled, without attachment, attachment itself is also non-existent, unattached, unsoiled, without attachment." Thus it is said, and it can be applied to others as well. Furthermore, in the Precious Garland of the Middle Way, it is also said: "Giving is completely abandoning self-interest, moral conduct is the activity of benefiting others, patience is abandoning anger, increasing white dharma is diligence, meditation is one-pointed and without afflictions, wisdom ascertains the true meaning." Thus it is said. Among the distinctions of the six perfections, the first, giving, is: the state of mind at the time when body and speech are engaged in giving, universally motivated by the mind of generosity, is the nature of giving. And this giving, with the wisdom of generating the mind of enlightenment, dedication, and realizing emptiness,

When it is encompassed by the three superiorities, it becomes the perfection of generosity. Generosity is divided into three: the generosity of Dharma, the generosity of material things, and the generosity of fearlessness and protection. The first is: to show others the meaning of words and sentences, including scriptures and their commentaries, according to how one understands them oneself. The second is: to give material things, as well as one's body and possessions, to others. The third is: to protect others from the fear of kings, fire, water, weapons, and so on. These are to be done by oneself directly, and to cultivate the intention to act in this way. In the context of generosity, the six perfections also arise: generosity itself, and discipline like abandoning the thought of Hearers and Solitary Realizers; patience in not being discouraged by others' insults and unpleasant words; diligence in generating aspiration to strive in this and to increase it; concentration like the one-pointedness of mind in dedicating merit to perfect enlightenment; and wisdom in knowing that the three circles of giver, giving, and receiver are without inherent existence and like illusions, these are the six. This method should also be applied appropriately to the remaining five perfections. As it is said in the Ornament for Clear Realization: "In each of these, generosity and so on, being gathered into six aspects, is whatever armor-like practice, the six-fold nature is taught as it is." Therefore, it is said. Second, discipline: the mind of abandoning, turning away from the basis of harm to others, is the nature of discipline. If it is encompassed by the three superiorities as before, it becomes the perfection of discipline. It is divided into three: the discipline of abstaining from misdeeds, the discipline of gathering virtuous Dharmas, and the discipline of benefiting sentient beings. The first is: to abandon whatever is naturally blameworthy, including the ten non-virtues. The second is: virtuous actions of body, speech, and mind, such as accumulating merit, and striving in listening, thinking, and meditating, engaging in the six perfections, rejoicing in virtue and dedicating it to perfect enlightenment, and so on. The third, benefiting sentient beings, is: Bodhisattvas benefit sentient beings by various means, that is, being a friend to those who are suffering, benefiting the ignorant, benefiting by giving help, benefiting by freeing from fear, and freeing from sorrow.
