Thus it is said. The meaning of dependent origination is: Its Sanskrit term is "Prati itim samutpada," which, due to circumstances, is written as "Pratītyasamutpāda," signifying three meanings: meeting, relying, and arising in dependence. The meaning of arising in dependence is: The agent relies on action, and the action also relies on the agent itself. Apart from arising in dependence, no cause for accomplishment is seen. As it is said, all phenomena are established in mutual dependence on one another, not merely arising from cause and condition. The second is: Whoever arises in dependence, without cessation, without arising, without severance, without permanence, without coming, without going, not different in meaning, not one in meaning, pacifying proliferation, proclaiming peace, to the supreme among those who speak of perfect enlightenment, I prostrate. The meaning is: I prostrate. To whom do I prostrate? To the Sage, the perfect Buddha, who taught dependent origination with what aspiration. How is it? Dependent origination, in relation to the nature of the object of undefiled meditative equipoise, is without cessation, which is the momentary destruction; without arising, which is to obtain one's own entity; without severance, which is the cessation of the previous; without permanence, which is the non-destruction; without coming here and going there; and without difference, which is the difference of meanings such as need, and without oneness, which is the non-difference of meanings. All these are absent, and negative terms are added to the end. The nature of dependent origination, as seen by the wisdom of the noble ones, in that vision, all proliferations such as arising and ceasing are completely pacified, and there, because there is no movement of mental and mental factors' conceptualization, it is peaceful because it is free from all the near harms of birth, aging, etc. The suchness of dependent origination, the perfect Buddha himself directly sees as it is, and teaches it well to others, therefore he is called the supreme among those who speak. Here, the eight, such as cessation, are mentioned with consideration for being the main basis of self and other's disputes. These eight, such as cessation, do not exist in the vision of the noble one's meditative equipoise, but they do exist in conventional terms. Non-cessation appears before non-arising to show that if self-nature were established, the order of arising and ceasing would become uncertain.
