Because (as said in the scriptures) the form realm and the formless realm are also the same. Third, regarding the additional points, if explained extensively, there would be many, but if summarized, among these afflictions, which are unwholesome? Which are indeterminate? There are. As it is said in the Treasury of Knowledge: 'All above are indeterminate; In the desire realm, the view of the aggregates of destruction and, The ignorance that arises together with the clinging to extremes, The rest are unwholesome here.' As it is said, all the afflictions of the two upper realms are obscured and indeterminate, although they are obscurations, they are subdued by the power of the samadhi of that realm, so they do not have the power to produce vipaka. The two views of the desire realm, the view of the aggregates of destruction and the clinging to extremes, and the ignorance associated with these two are also obscured and indeterminate. Apart from these three, the remaining subtle and increasing attachment, hatred, resentment, doubt, those with afflictions, wrong view, view of holding views as supreme, view of holding ethical conduct as supreme, and most of the twenty secondary afflictions are also unwholesome, and the sixty-two root afflictions also need to be carefully distinguished. In the two upper realms, there is no attachment to desirable qualities such as form and sound, but although there is attachment to the samadhi, it is not unwholesome, but indeterminate. The ignorance that is deluded about the selflessness of suchness does not produce vipaka, so it is indeterminate, and most of the ignorance that is deluded about the coarse karma and its results is considered unwholesome, as the quote from the Treasury of Knowledge cited above specifically designates the two wrong views and the associated ignorance as indeterminate, so it can be understood. The four inversions and the other sixty-four wrong views are divided from the three: the view of the aggregates of destruction, the clinging to extremes, and the wrong view, so those divided from the wrong view are unwholesome. These root afflictions and secondary afflictions are called subtle and increasing, because through the door of the object and the associated, they also increase the subtle latent tendencies of the afflictions. Because these afflictions keep beings in samsara, they are called 'leaks'; because they carry beings to the four births, they are called 'rivers'; because they bind beings to samsara, they are called 'bonds'; because they give rise to close attachment to samsara, they are called 'close grasping,' as explained by their definitions. Furthermore, the desire for pleasure, malice, the view of the aggregates of destruction, the view of holding ethical conduct as supreme, and the doubt of those with afflictions, these five are called the five lower fetters because they prevent beings from transcending the desire realm.

Yala! The desire for the upper realms is twofold: Agitation, pride, and ignorance. These five prevent one from transcending the two upper realms, hence they are called the five affinities of the upper realms. The three afflicted views—view of the perishable aggregate, adherence to faulty moral practices and vows, and doubt—are called the three bonds, because they bind one to the wrong path by, respectively, not wanting to be liberated, taking the wrong path, and doubting the correct path. The term "all-entwiner" is said to be a general name for all afflictions, but the Treasury of Knowledge individually states that the ten—shamelessness, recklessness, jealousy, stinginess, agitation, regret, drowsiness, sleep, anger, and concealment—are all-entwiners, because they entwine and bind the mind in the direction of afflictions from all sides. However, there are two types of regret: regret for virtuous deeds is an affliction and is unwholesome, while sleep that delights in doing virtuous deeds is virtuous, so a distinction must be made. The basis for the arising of afflictions is the predispositions of afflictions. The object is: The appearance of objects that cause afflictions to arise, and the mental noting of attractive and unattractive signs, and so on. The faults are: Under the influence of afflictions, many undesirable things arise in this life, and by accumulating unwholesome actions, one will experience various sufferings in future lives, and so on. Although there are two causes for being born in samsara, karma and afflictions, afflictions are the main one. As the Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path says: "Two things are needed to accomplish samsara: karma and afflictions. But afflictions are the main one. If there are no afflictions, even if there are countless previously accumulated karmas, they will not produce sprouts, just as seeds without moisture and soil will not produce sprouts. Because karma does not have a co-operative cause, it will not produce the sprout of suffering. If there are afflictions, even if there is no previously accumulated karma, it will immediately accumulate new karma and take the next aggregate." Thus, as it says in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "Other actions, transcending the desire for existence, cannot throw [one into rebirth], because the co-operative factor is exhausted." And: "If desire is present, it will arise again." Therefore, it is said that among the afflictions, desire is the main factor in accomplishing samsara. However
