A Clear and Concise Explanation of the Arising of Afflictions. A Clear and Concise Explanation of the Arising of Afflictions. A Clear and Concise Explanation of the Arising of Afflictions is presented. All the teachings to be adopted and abandoned, having directly perceived them, and with compassion for others, the incomparable teacher who skillfully instructs, and at the feet of the venerable treasure of wisdom, I pay homage. All the doctrines of the Abhidharma spoken by the Buddhas, such as the Unobstructed Brother, who clearly elucidated them, with reverence to the scholars of Jambudvipa, I will briefly explain the meaning of the Abhidharma. That is, a person who desires liberation must have a good understanding of the principles of the two truths of suffering and origin among the four truths. If one does not understand and does not contemplate the distinctions of the truth of suffering, then a special renunciation of the desire for liberation will not arise from it. If one does not understand the distinctions of the truth of origin, then one will not know how to cut off the root of samsara. As it is said in the "Compendium of the Stages of the Path": "If you do not strive to contemplate the faults of the truth of suffering, then the desire for liberation will not arise as it should. If you do not contemplate the order of entering samsara from the origin, then you will not know how to cut off the root of samsara." Therefore. These principles are explained in the upper and lower Abhidharma texts, and are also explained in the Perfection of Wisdom and the Stages of the Path, etc., as appropriate. I myself have also explained them as appropriate in the commentary on the Treasury and in the principles of karma, etc. Here, I will separately explain the principles of afflictions in a concise manner, in three parts: 1. A general presentation of the classification of afflictions; 2. A detailed explanation. First, as the Buddha said, for the antidote to the eighty-four thousand afflictions, he taught the eighty-four thousand aggregates of Dharma. Similarly, in the aspect of afflictions, there are also eighty-four thousand, because the antidote and the number are the same. Twenty-one thousand belong to the category of attachment. Similarly, twenty-one thousand belong to the category of anger, ignorance, and any of the three poisons equally, totaling eighty-four thousand. As it is said in the Treasury of Knowledge: "For the antidotes to all actions, the corresponding aggregates of Dharma are taught." Therefore. Second, in four parts: definition, etymology, function, and classification. The first is the disturbance of the mind that corresponds to oneself.

That mental factor which abides as a type that does not pacify the continuum is the characteristic of affliction. There is a need to establish the lineage because the afflictions in the continuum of a noble Bodhisattva do not pacify their mental continuum, because the afflictions in their continuum are like poison destroyed by medicine and mantras, and therefore have little power. Secondly, it is called affliction because it makes the mind confused or does not pacify it. Thirdly, it generates other afflictions and actions, and makes them continuous and abiding, and so on. Fourthly, there are four divisions: from the point of view of essence, there are six root afflictions, twenty secondary afflictions, from the point of view of aspect, there are ten, and from the point of view of realm, there are ninety-eight. First, the six root afflictions are: The Treasury says: "The root of existence, six subtle increases: desire, likewise anger, pride, ignorance, view, and doubt." That is, the six are desire, anger, pride, ignorance, wrong view, and doubt, which are the root afflictions. First, desire is the mental phenomenon of attachment to contaminated objects. Second, anger is a rough mental phenomenon that focuses on the basis of mental torment from all beings or thorns, etc. Third, pride is a mental phenomenon of arrogance that relies on the view of the perishable aggregate and focuses on the three situations of high, low, and medium. Fourth, ignorance is the mental phenomenon of being deluded about the four truths and karma and its effects, and is the opponent of the light of wisdom. Fifth, the afflicted doubt is the mental phenomenon of doubting the existence of the Three Jewels and karma and its effects. Sixth, there are five afflicted views. First, the view of the perishable aggregate is the afflicted wisdom that focuses on the aggregates of appropriation and views them as "I" and "mine," clinging to "I" and "mine." Second, the extreme view is the afflicted wisdom that focuses on the "I" grasped by the view of the perishable aggregate, viewing it as permanent or as annihilation without rebirth from here. Third, the view of holding views as supreme is the afflicted wisdom that considers inferior views to be supreme and clings to them. Fourth, wrong view denies
