From the 'In Praise of Dependent Arising,' it says, 'All the declines in the world, their root is ignorance.' Thus, if we consider it from the perspective of the initial root cause, ignorance is the most important. Because if there is ignorance, other afflictions, actions, craving, grasping, and other limbs will also arise. If there is no ignorance, there will be no accumulation of karma. If there is no accumulation of karma, from craving and grasping to old age and death will not occur, because the order of the twelve links of dependent arising is certain. There are two ways to abandon them. From their respective perspectives, the antidote to attachment is ugliness, the antidote to hatred or anger is loving-kindness, the antidote to delusion is the arising and ceasing of the twelve links of dependent arising. There are two types of pride: The first is the pride that arises from lineage, wealth, etc., and its antidote is to contemplate that these are impermanent and subject to separation. The antidote to pride arising from learning is to contemplate the nature of the knowable realm and the infinite differences. The antidote to jealousy is to be without competitiveness and to cultivate equanimity. The antidote to wrong views is to cultivate correct views, and so on. Furthermore, there are many ways to contemplate the faults of these afflictions. However, the most important of all antidotes to abandoning afflictions is the wisdom that realizes selflessness. If one mainly cultivates this wisdom, one can abandon the root of all afflictions—ignorance. If ignorance is abandoned, all other afflictions will naturally cease. For this, there are many sources in the sutras and treatises, but here are just a few examples. In the 'Praise of the Dharmadhatu' by the Noble One, it says, 'To see the truth, know that things are empty. Knowing ignorance well, ignorance does not arise. Therefore, ignorance ceases, and therefore the twelve links cease.' The 'Four Hundred Verses' says, 'Therefore, all afflictions are destroyed by destroying ignorance.' The 'Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life' says, 'All these limbs, the Able One has said, are for the sake of wisdom. Therefore, those who desire to pacify suffering should cultivate wisdom.' The 'Three Principal Aspects of the Path' says, 'Without the wisdom that realizes the nature of reality, even if one cultivates renunciation and the mind of enlightenment, one cannot cut the root of existence. Therefore, one should strive to understand the means of dependent arising.'

Moreover, the Pramāṇavārttika also states: "Liberation comes from the view of emptiness; the remaining meditation is for that purpose." Furthermore, wisdom is praised above all the scriptures, as stated in the Compendium: "The eye of seeing the reality of profound wisdom, the path that uproots the root of existence, the treasure of virtues praised above all the scriptures, is renowned as the supreme lamp that dispels the darkness of ignorance." Because it is said so. For that reason, among the two, karma and afflictions, abandoning afflictions is more important. However, the Compendium states: "Especially important is purifying karmic obscurations." This is because present beings cannot cut off afflictions from the root and abandon them. One should mainly strive for the method of purifying karmic obscurations. It is said: Sentient beings in the six realms of samsara, from the peak of existence to hell, revolving like a wheel of fire, the cause is karma and afflictions. Afflictions such as hatred and desire, do not have hands and feet, nor are they brave and intelligent, but like something, they lead these beings involuntarily. Therefore, the thief of afflictions must be repelled with the sword of antidotes, otherwise, the wealth of higher realms and definite goodness will undoubtedly be stolen by it. Therefore, one must know the nature, classification, causes of arising, faults, and methods of abandoning afflictions. Not knowing is like groping for a stone in the dark. Therefore, here is written the classification of it. Thus, this brief explanation of the arising of afflictions is completed. This was written with faith by the Shakya monk named Shedrup at Dzongne Monastery, thinking it might be helpful to one or two who are in need. May the virtue of printing with faith by Oré Rabjampa, who possesses faith and wisdom, lead to liberation from karma and afflictions! Sarva Mangalam! Shubham! A brief and clear explanation of the arising of afflictions.
